With the opening event of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship season at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit just one week away, race-winning team SWR is confident of a strong start to the new campaign following a competitive test outing at Snetterton in Norfolk on Wednesday, 16th April. As the sole officially timed run of the pre-season, this week’s ‘Media Day’ test gave the drivers and teams their first true opportunity to gauge their respective performances against the opposition and SWR’s rookie trio, Nicolas Beer, Jordan Albert and Diego Borrelli, displayed excellent potential.Danish teenager Beer, the only competitor from the Chipping Norton team’s line-up with a full year of single-seater experience under his belt, led SWR’s charge with a hugely impressive fifth fastest time overall at Snetterton’s 2.97-mile 300 Circuit.Beer’s best lap of 1m50.937 seconds (96.34mph) came during the afternoon session and was a 0.4 second improvement on his quickest effort from earlier in the day. Significantly, he was the second fastest F4 newcomer and only 0.388 seconds shy of the best lap of all.British youngster Albert ended the outing a very competitive eighth quickest on combined times, his best lap of 1m51.271 seconds (96.05mph) actually placing him seventh fastest in the morning. In the second session, the Silverstone village-based driver was within 0.2 seconds of his fastest time.Venezuelan karting graduate Borrelli, meanwhile, also posted his best lap in the morning which placed him 14th on the overall timesheets. His best was a lap of 1m52.463 seconds (95.03mph) and, like Albert, he was only 0.2 seconds outside his fastest pace in the afternoon.“All of the guys did really well, I’m very pleased with how strong they were at Snetterton”, said SWR team owner Sean Walkinshaw, “The Media Day test has set the whole team up nicely for Silverstone next weekend, we’re really looking forward to it. Nicolas was very good, he really impressed and to end the day in the top five overall, behind some very experienced drivers, was great going.“Jordan did a brilliant job too, especially considering how little experience he has. Snetterton is only the second track we’ve been to with him, he put in a good performance and definitely has a lot of potential. Diego is getting better and better each time he’s in the car, his pace on old tyres is good and as soon as he’s got to grips fully with the new tyres he’ll be making big progress.”With SWR’s ‘home’ track, Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit, hosting the first three rounds of the new BRDC F4 season, hopes are high of some strong partisan support and particularly for Jordan Albert who will be competing for the first time at the venue which is, quite literally, a stone’s throw from his home in the neighbouring village.Following additional pre-event testing prior to next weekend’s race meeting, qualifying for the first race of the 2014 BRDC Formula 4 Championship season will take place at Silverstone on Saturday, 26th April, at 10.15 ahead of round one at 14.10. On Sunday, 27th April, round two is scheduled to get underway at 10.20 with round three following at 14.45.
