Lando Norris proves his class in Ginetta Junior Championship

ADD Motorsports driver Lando Norris looked as though he had been driving cars for years rather than days after some brilliant performances in the Ginetta Junior Championship. In what was only his second outing in the competition, the 14-year-old finished second in both races – his first podiums in his fledgling car career.

And in moving up into third place overall, he also put himself in the driving seat for top rookie. But despite leaving many older and more experienced drivers in his wake, Lando is sure there is a lot more to come. He said: “It was a really good weekend, I felt a lot more confident and had improved a lot from my last race. It’s been great being at the front of races again.

“I have worked a lot of things out since the last round – I’m getting used to the tricks other drivers use and how to get that extra speed. “It was brilliant to get my first podiums, but I know I can do even better with a bit more time.” Lando looked more confident from the very first test on Thursday, when despite driving on new tyres - effectively slowing the car - he ended up second and just a tenth off the fastest driver.

The second session was on an old tyre and he finished second again – this time four tenths off the top spot. Lando admits to taking up some bad positions for Saturday’s qualifiers. Despite this, his pace was still there and he finished second again for the first one. With the second fastest lap taken for the second qualifying position, Lando’s was good enough to see him second again. Lando got a good start in Race 1, but although he had got ahead of the driver in pole, couldn’t overtake and was squeezed onto the grass. This allowed the driver behind to catch up meaning he was forced to defend his position for the next few laps. He eventually pulled away and finished second to get his first podium.

Amazingly, it was yet another second place finish in Race 2 – the story of the weekend. Starting in second place again, the Glastonbury racer got a much better start and managed to get in front on the first corner. But after going slightly wide on the third lap, he allowed another driver to get in front again on the inside, pushing him wider still and leaving him floundering in fourth. He overtook one in front on the same lap and although couldn’t catch either of the leaders, was awarded second place when one was later penalised.

Lando added: “It’s great to be the top rookie at the moment, but it’s only the second round and I think I can improve still - and get more podiums and push the two leaders.

“I wasn’t doing something right on the gears which was losing me time, but I have sorted that out now which has really helped. I’m much faster in the tests as well as the races.

“We’ve been really fast and as long as I know we are fast enough, it’s down to me to drive well. “Now I just want to keep working and improving and see where I can get to.”
