Donington Ginetta GT4 Win Puts Massot's Season Back On Track

Spanish sportscar racer Pepe Massot got his 2014 Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup campaign firmly back on track at Donington Park National Circuit over the weekend, 19th/20th April, by securing two excellent podium finishes – including his first victory of the season.Round five on Sunday morning was the highlight for the 18-year-old who, in very challenging rainy conditions, produced a masterclass in wet-weather driving while under serious pressure for the bulk of the 18 lap contest.Starting the second race of the weekend from the outside of the front row, as a result of his top two finish in round four on Saturday afternoon, Massot took the lead immediately after a great launch and instantly started to open a healthy advantage.Unluckily for the JHR Developments driver, his hard-earned lead of more than two seconds on lap one was eroded when the Safety Car was deployed. At the resumption on lap four, Massot made no mistakes and although Charlie Robertson closed up at mid-distance and again on the penultimate lap the Spaniard’s defence couldn’t be broken. He won by 1.7 seconds in the end.“We started the weekend 59 points shy of the championship leader I think and we finished it 43 points behind so, in those terms, it’s been an OK weekend”, said the Sheffield-based youngster, “It was very nice to win race two, we showed we had the pace in qualifying, and good to take away a lot of points as that’s what we needed.”In contention for the round four pole position during qualifying on Saturday, Massot had to settle for the fourth fastest time when his quickest lap right at the end of the session – which would have put him atop the times – didn’t count due to red flags being shown just prior to him crossing the line.Almost 0.3 seconds quicker than the eventual pole, a faultless performance produced the best time in each of the three sectors and ultimately the fastest ever lap recorded in a Ginetta G55 at Donington. Incredibly, the red flags were shown just four seconds before Massot completed the lap!Elevated to third on the grid before the start of round four, due to a penalty for a rival carried over from the opening weekend of the season at Brands Hatch, Massot made an excellent start to move alongside Jamie Orton and took second place into Redgate.Instantly pressuring Robertson for the lead, the Spaniard swarmed all over the back of the leader’s car through McLeans, Coppice and into the chicane and on the run to Redgate at the start of lap two, he lined-up an attack. With the door slammed shut, Massot had to tuck back into second position and although matching the leader’s pace he had to settle for the runner-up spot at the finish on lap 12 – seven seconds clear of the chasing pack.Unfortunately, the wrong tyre choice for round six on Sunday afternoon left Massot with a very tough task and led to an eventual finish of 12th position. With the track still damp in places, some of the drivers – including Massot – ran on treaded rubber while the majority of the grid opted for slicks. In the end, slick Michelins were the way to go as the track continued to dry but Massot’s challenge was made all the harder with the fact his tyres were brand new and not ‘scrubbed’ wets. Leading to a lack of grip compared to the others, he was powerless to prevent a slip outside the top 10.“The first race was alright considering how qualifying went and how unlucky we were with the pole lap and everything”, added Massot, “The second race was very nice, great to win, but the last race was a nightmare – we had no grip with the wet tyres. I had brand new ones and we needed tyres more like intermediates so that didn’t work out.”Next on the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup calendar will be the annual visit to Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire less than two weeks from now, over the weekend 3rd/4th May.Provisional 2014 Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup Driver Standings (after Rd6):6th Pepe Massot, 108pts
