Veteran Eyre-Maunsell joins BHRC
Veteran rally ace Robin Eyre-Maunsell will join the 2004 Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship for round four of the championship, the Mutiny Rally on Saturday, 5 June.Eyre-Maunsell, who started rallying in 1966, has competed extensively for nearly four decades, but his last gravel rally was the 1982 Mille Pistes in France when he drove the ex-Guy Frequelin Sunbeam Lotus. Now, the Northern Ireland based driver will contest the Mutiny in the Ford Cortina GT normally driven by Peter Scott. The pair compete on classic road rallies together, when Scott navigates in Eyre-Maunsell's Sunbeam Alpine. However, with a cricket test match at Headingley in Leeds clashing with the Mutiny, Scott cannot do the event due to pressure of work at his Brett's Fish Restaurant.Instead, Eyre-Maunsell will take over the car and will be partnered by Simon Bentley. "I did love the Welsh forests," reckons Eyre-Maunsell, now 64 years old. "This will probably just show how you can go from bad to worse. However, the real snag is that I might enjoy it!"Robin has, in fact, already driven the Cortina this year having shared it at Stoneleigh with the MSA's John Grant during the Historic Motorsport show. "John was quicker than me that day," admits Eyre-Maunsell.Eyre-Maunsell and Grant rallied together in Ireland back in 1966 in a Singer Chamois, retiring from every one of the 13 events they contested! After that, Robin went on enjoy considerable success as a works driver for Rootes and Chrysler.
