One Weekend, Two Countries and Two Championships For Josh Caygill

Josh Caygill will embark on the busiest and, arguably, most challenging weekend of his motor racing career just a few days from now when he not only competes in two different Volkswagen championships, but also in two different countries! While this coming weekend, 3rd/4th May, marks the start of the pan-European Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup at Hockenheim in Germany, the Bank Holiday break in England is also the date for the second race meeting of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup at Rockingham.Getting his 2014 season underway at Oulton Park in Cheshire a week ago in the VW Racing Cup, the 24-year-old steered his Volkswagen Scirocco to a ninth place finish in the sole race to have taken place – the second encounter cancelled due to scheduling issues following earlier incidents. While determined to score as heavily as he can at Rockingham, Caygill faces an incredibly difficult task as he will have to forego the VW Racing Cup qualifying session due to his R Cup commitments in Europe hundreds of miles away. This means he will start the opening race on Monday from the back of the grid after travelling across the continent overnight from Germany.“We’ll be starting Rockingham on the back foot but whatever we do we’ll be going forwards from the back of the grid”, said the West Yorkshireman, “The organisers have given special dispensation to go straight into the races, so we’ll be travelling through the night across to the Euro Tunnel from Hockenheim, 45 minutes in the Tunnel, and then up to the hotel near Rockingham.“It’ll be a late one but we should get a few hours shut eye. If we can get through the first lap clean and have a good run, I’d like to think we can be in the top 20 up to the top 15 pretty quickly. If we manage to stay out of trouble then I want to aim for the top 10 as that’s where we’d then start race two from. It’s going to be a massive challenge but it’ll be mega, a bit of an adventure!”Caygill’s Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup season will begin on Friday, 2nd May, with a 45-minute free practice session at Hockenheim and as soon as the last of the weekend’s races has been completed he will begin the long journey by road back to the UK.Featuring what is billed as the ‘most eco-friendly racing car in the world’, the Scirocco utilised in the R Cup features a 2.0-litre TSI engine which is powered by natural gas – reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent in comparison to conventional fuels.Additionally, the cars benefit from a ‘push-to-pass’ mechanism which provides drivers with an additional 50bhp to promote overtaking. Gears, meanwhile, are selected by way of a steering wheel mounted ‘paddle shift’ system and, unlike his UK Scirocco, the cars are all left-hand drive.“I can’t wait to get on track at Hockenheim, but I’m under no illusions”, added Caygill, “I’m racing against some experienced drivers who have done the R Cup before and there’s a lot of talent out there – it’s a high calibre grid. It won’t be easy but we’re going out there with an open mind. I’d love to win, obviously, but if we can just be competitive and get two good finishes I’ll be happy.”Travelling out to Germany on Wednesday, 30th April, Caygill’s first track outing at Hockenheim will come during practice on Friday, 2nd May. Qualifying will start at 08.10 (UK time) on Saturday, 3rd May, with race one following at 13.45 (UK time). On Sunday, 4th May, round two will begin at 15.25 (UK time). Live streaming and timing will be carried online at www.volkswagen-motorsport.comAt Rockingham in the UK on Bank Holiday Monday, 5th May, the first of the weekend’s VW Racing Cup encounters will commence at 10.00 with the second race beginning at 16.10 – live timing will be available at www.tsl-timing.com
