Ovie Iroro scores maiden Formula Ford top ten at Thruxton

Nigerian racer Ovie Iroro was able to celebrate a maiden top ten finish after his second outing in the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain at Thruxton.Having made his debut in the series with Lincolnshire-based Richardson Racing at Donington Park, the youngster was seeking to continue his single-seater education at the most challenging circuit on the schedule. With the pre-event test at the Hampshire circuit having taken place last month, rather than on the Friday prior to the race weekend, Ovie faced a huge challenge in the fact that the first on-track action of the weekend was the all-important qualifying session.Lapping a full 3.8secs quicker than he had done in testing, Ovie qualified eleventh on the grid but was left to play catch-up when he stalled at the start as the lights went out to start race one.Able to close on the pack when the Safety Car was deployed for an accident elsewhere, the 20-year-old made light work of passing Greg Holloway to secure a first top ten finish in the series. The remaining two races yielded a pair of eleventh place results, with Ovie knocking a further six-tenths of a second off his quickest lap in the second race and then enjoying an impressive start to race three as he battled ahead of rival Bobby Thompson and also kept race two winner Juan Rosso at bay through the opening lap.The results from the weekend leave Ovie 14th in the championship standings and sixth in the scholarship class.“I think it’s been a good weekend again,” he said. “This is a really challenging circuit to come to, especially as a rookie in my second meeting, so I think I’ve exceeded the expectations. I was a long way off the pace during testing last month, but my lap times were a lot quicker and I was much closer to the rest of the field and I feel I improved every time I went out on track.“I know it will take time to get fully on the pace, and that will come as the season goes on and I spend more time in the car. This wasn’t the ideal circuit for me to try and learn more about the car because it’s so unique, bit if I can handle Thruxton, I think I can handle anywhere! Hopefully I can make some more progress at Oulton Park next time out and fight for a place in the top ten again.”As was the case on his debut weekend at Donington Park, team principal Gwyn Richardson was pleased with Iroro’s performance on track.“Ovie has done really well again this weekend,” he said. “He’s made a huge improvement compared to the test we did last month and we know that there is more to come.“Thruxton is a difficult circuit for any driver, never mind one with limited experience, so I think Ovie can be pleased with how he has got on and we’ll see what progress we can make at Oulton Park.”
