Mondello Park will host rounds nine and ten of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB over the weekend of 12/13 June. Heading to Ireland, Tim Harvey (Team RPM) currently heads the championship contest by 22 points, having won four of the six races to date. In Ireland, the Carrera Cup will reach the half-way point and the title contest is finely-balanced. Four drivers have edged clear in the points race across the opening eight races and now the challenge of Mondello Park awaits.Back in a Porsche for a full campaign this season, former BTCC champion Tim Harvey (Team RPM) currently holds the upperhand, but his 18-point lead is the equivalent of less than one race win, and Tim saw four points nibbled away last time out at Oulton Park by Richard Westbrook (Red Line Racing).A non-finish in round three at Brands Hatch when he was clipped from behind is costing Westbrook dear at present, but with 12 races still to run there is everything to play for. Ironically, missing the opening races of the 2003 season at Mondello cost Westbrook the title and he is now determined to win the 2004 title and the £55,000 road-going Porsche that is sitting waiting for the overall champion!"I've not been to Mondello since 1995," admits Westbrook. "I've heard it’s a lot different now," he adds. Harvey, meanwhile, raced here in the 2002 BTCC, so he's got a slight head start in circuit knowledge. "I do like the circuit; it's good for racing," says Tim.However, at Oulton Park it was Jason Templeman (Team VLR) who drove superbly to take maximum points right behind VIP racer Alain Menu. That left Jason only seven points down on Westbrook and very much in the title contest. The same applies to local hero Jonathan Fildes (TCR) who will plan to use his local expertise to maximum effect.Outside the big four, the next pack of drivers will invariably include Chris Cooper (Team Parker Racing), Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing), Andy Britnell (Motorbase Performance), Jason Young (Red Line Racing) and Martin Rich (Team Parker Racing).Of that group, only Britnell has ever raced at Mondello before, although both Cooper and Rice have tested with encouraging results. "I thought it was great," said Cooper of the Irish track, after his first visit for a test day back in March.Provisional championship points after round eight:1 Tim Harvey 144; 2 Richard Westbrook 126; 3 Jason Templeman 119; 4 Jonathan Fildes 114; 5 Chris Cooper 86; 6 Nigel Rice 85; 7 Andy Britnell 76; 8 Jason Young 60; 9 Martin Rich 41; 10 Marcus Thomas 40; etc.
