Spedeworth International brought the curtain down on stock car racing at Wimbledon for the summer break in fine style as the Rookie Bangers ground each other to scrap metal in a six side team meeting, that saw the cars take part in the usual automotive mayhem as well as chained pairs racing and the incredible ramp roll over competition.
The carnage was tremendous from the second the green flag waved for the first race, with car after car piling into the safety fence as the teams blitzed each other in an attempt to claim the team championship title from current holders Team Loss. The manic chained pairs race was won by 623, Gary Lawrence and 738, John Bargery for the mightily named A1 Loo Hire team - who says F1 has all the glamorous sponsors!
The ramp rollover was won in fine style by 763, Chris Wood, who pulled off a rollover that would have done a Hollywood stunt man proud as he sent his car rolling and down the home straight in a shower of sparks and flying metal.
With it all to play for the Bangers came out en masse for the final that rapidly turned into a practice session for the demolition derby. 744 had his entire rear axel ripped off, bringing out the red flags for track clearance. The surviving cars fought it out in an holds barred race until the dust finally settled and the points were tallied up, giving the win to the Hertfordshire track Bovy Boys.
Amazingly over 20 cars made it out for the demo derby which put a suitably metal wrenching full stop to the evening with a series of head on crashes that reduced the field to heaps of scrap metal in very short order. The last car left moving was 757, Jay Killingback.
The rapid Stock Rods were also in action with the cars and drivers being tested to the full with a 40-lap Le Mans style start (where the drivers sprint to their cars, jump in and take off) as the highlight of the night's racing. First away was 3, Craig Middlemass, but as the gruelling laps unfolded he was overhauled by star driver 168, Andy Sturt for the win.
