Alex Lynn wins first GP3 race

Red Bull Junior Team driver Alex Lynn has made a dream GP3 debut with Carlin in Barcelona, winning the Feature Race and setting fastest lap, having clinched pole position the day before.

Britain’s next big Formula One hope led from pole at the second start, after the first start was abandoned when another competitor stalled. From that point on, Alex was never headed. “It wasn’t the best start I’ve ever made in my career, but it was good enough for me to keep the lead, which was the main thing!” said Alex, from the top step of the podium.

Having moved into the lead Lynn was able to control his advantage, even setting fastest lap. He beat Koiranen driver Jimmy Eriksson by nearly two and a half seconds: not a bad result for somebody competing in his first GP3 race.

“The car felt amazing: I know it’s a cliché but I really have to thank my team, and also Red Bull,” said Alex – who now has a 13-point lead in the drivers’ championship.

There are two races to each GP3 weekend, with the Sprint Race taking place at 0925 on Sunday. Under GP3 regulations, the top eight finishers in the Feature Race have their positions reversed on the grid for the Sprint Race – so Alex will start from eighth.
