Double Donington Points Score For Pidgle

Michelin Clio Cup Race Series rookie Ollie Pidgley chalked-up his first double points score of the 2014 season at Donington Park National Circuit in Leicestershire over the weekend, 31st May/1st June, with eighth and ninth place finishes in rounds five and six of the campaign – as well as claiming the ‘Sport Class’ victory in each encounter.Enabling the Downton 16-year-old to climb two positions in the championship standings, rising into ninth place, Pidgley also confirmed his clear potential in the bright and sunny conditions after setting a best lap in the second race which was less than 0.2 seconds shy of the fastest of all.“I’m pretty happy really with the way the weekend has gone overall”, said the Team Pyro driver, “I’d never been to Donington in the dry before this weekend, but we still managed to have the fastest lap at one point in race two. I think we could have had a couple of top sixes at least really, but we still managed to score in both races and keep making progress which is the main thing.”With zero dry-weather running at the East Midlands track prior to Saturday morning’s qualifying session, Pidgley went into the period on the back-foot compared to his main rivals but emerged with the eighth fastest time just 0.3 seconds behind Race Series front-runner Luke Herbert.Making a sensational start, climbing into the top five, the first year saloon car racer was edged back to sixth later in the lap but on the third tour a tangle involving Jeff Smith and Andy Jordan at Craner Curves enabled Pidgley to move up into the top four.Bumped back to seventh place just before mid-distance, the Wiltshire teenager then had to defend as hard as he was attacking with former championship leader David Dickenson pressuring. Forced to give best to the vastly experienced Irishman, Pidgley was determined to hold on to a top eight finish and he managed to do so after a great see-saw battle with Paul Streather.“Starts were an issue at Rockingham and Oulton Park, but we managed to stay with the front guys this time which was a massive improvement”, said the MSA Academy driver, “I made up a couple of places at the first corner and then it was all about defending, at some points trying to defend and attack at the same time. In the end, eighth wasn’t too bad considering the experience around me.”For round six on Sunday, Pidgley lined-up on the fifth row of the grid and made it through the opening lap in eighth place before the Safety Car was deployed due to a turn one incident. At the re-start, the Renault Clio driver pursued Brett Lidsey with Tommy Ostgaard not far behind and on lap seven Pidgley set the fastest lap of the race.Although the time was bettered in the end by Herbert, the Pyro driver served notice of his excellent pace and he continued to circulate in eighth place until the end of lap nine when contact with Lidsey led to the latter ending his race in the gravel at the chicane.Assuming seventh position, Pidgley teed-up a potential pass on Sam Randon into Redgate on the final lap but the bold move around the outside didn’t quite work out and he instead ran wide on the marbles, slipping to ninth in the process.“I had to have a go at it really, it was worth trying and there was nothing much to lose”, explained the McLaren Young Driver Advancement Programme racer, “I would have liked to have finished higher up this weekend but we’re making improvements and the pace is definitely there. I’m looking forward to going back to Brands now next month.”There is now a lengthy eight week summer break ahead of rounds seven and eight of the Michelin Clio Cup Race Series, which will take place over the weekend 26th/27th July, at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent.
