New FIA rule promises even more action - Wales Rally GB 16 - 19 September 2004
Wales Rally GB is bringing the very best of rallying to UK shores, following the inclusion of new regulations to this season’s World Rally Championship. Starting at last weekend’s thrilling Acropolis Rally, in Greece, the FIA introduced the SupeRally system, allowing retired cars to restart the rally. This means spectators at this year’s Wales Rally GB will see more of the cars, bringing them even more action.
The SupeRally system is on trial for the rest of the Championship season and is a popular decision for fans, marshals and competitors alike. Any car that retires can now be repaired and drive in the following legs, but will not be awarded any points. In Greece, 11 cars including manufacturers took advantage of the new system and drove on Saturday, after retiring on Friday. It is expected that around 50% of the field that retires will restart subsequent days.
Claire Parker, Sporting Manager for Rally GB Ltd comments, “This is a fantastic addition to an already exciting season. The SupeRally system increases the interest for everyone involved in the Championship. By increasing the number of cars competing on the Saturday and Sunday of an event, marshals and spectators will have the opportunity to see more of the top level World Rally Cars in action and their favourite privateer competitors. Indeed, the new rule is particularly good news for privateer competitors who will be able to restart their cars and get the most out of every event.
“This season just gets better at every turn and with Wales Rally GB just over two months away, the anticipation is soaring. By September the SupeRally system will be in full flow and spectators will be able to watch the teams take full advantage of every second they get to drive.”
