Llanybydder rally driver, Dorian Rees and his Aberystwyth co-driver Patrick Walsh may have had a late call to attend the third round of the Kwik-Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship, the Scottish Rally on 11th/12th June 2004, but the pair drove with maturity to ensure they collected maximum points in Prodrive Subaru Production Cup 2004 and maintain a healthy lead in the Production Class.
The Welsh pair received a late night phone call to contest the rally following some last minute funding to hire a car after their dramatic exit from the Mutiny Rally a week earlier. The decision had come so late in the week, that the only way Rees would make the Scottish start was by missing the recce of which Rees knew would cost him time on the rally.
"Following the busy week I had, I was more than pleased to make the start. We knew missing the recce would prove costly on time, but we had planned just to make sure we brought the car home in one piece."
The Friday evening start had the pair down on power with an intercooler pipe split and had them running low down the field.
The problem cured Rees started to improve on times and continued throughout the day moving up the leaderboard after each stage in the Subaru Impreza WRX and eventually reached the finish in fifteenth place overall and also claimed third in the Production Class.
"We are very happy with the result, it would have been nice to challenge for the lead in the class, but in the circumstances we cannot complain. We missed the recce and we were penalised for that, it certainly cost a lot of time. We still have the lead in both Production and the Prodrive Subaru Production Cup, so its not a time to complain."
Rees and Walsh will now repair the Subaru following the Mutiny Rally incident and if they can find funding will contest the next round of the series, the Jim Clark Rally on 2nd/3rd July 2004.
