David Higgins Scottish Review
Full of confidence going into round three of the Kwik-Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship, series leader David Higgins felt only a mechanical problem would deprive him of taken his second win in the championship. Contesting the Scottish International Rally on 11th/12th June 2004, Higgins was also aware that any mistakes could also cost him the series lead.Driving a SGP Hyundai Accent World Rally Car, Higgins with Craig Thorley alongside, immediately took the lead on the Friday night stages and confessed the car was working extremely well.An early morning re-start saw the Pirelli International winners collecting a puncture early on in the first stage of the day and losing the lead of the rally."Half a mile into the first stage we had a heavy landing over a jump, soon after realised we had a rear flat with more that 6 miles to go, we continued to drive with the puncture which cost us around thirty seconds. Then on the next stage trying hard to make up time we had a 5th gear spin at one corner, which also cost around fifteen seconds."David and Craig continued throughout the day content with second place to maintain their lead in the championship, now realising another spin could also put them on the retirement list. The pair were very surprised to be taken time out of the leader and thought they may still have a chance of the win."The last three stages we were nineteen seconds off the lead, clawing back five on the first in only a four mile stage. We then took another nine back on the last stage. Its a shame to lose out by only nine seconds when we knew how much time we lost at the start of the second day. The consolation is we still have good lead in championship."David is now pondering on what to do for the remainder of the season, while he currently leads the series he may well hand the championship to another driver due to a lack of budget to complete the series."It would be a shame to have to pull the plug now in such a good position but without some financial support that will be the only option. The team have been fantastic and have done a great job for the first three rallies, so I hope we can carry on for them as much as us. We have been able to give the defending champion some competition that has made the series more interesting this year and I hope we can continue to see the series out, but that will definitely depend on getting the funding." David & Craig are supported in their BRC campaign by Pirelli, Truck Care, Vodka Kick, Barretts, Forest Experience Rally School, Barrier Surveillance, Motorsport Travel and Castrol.
