Famous victory for Team JWR
Mike Jordan and Mark Sumpter scored a dramatic victory for Jordan Warnock Racing in round eight of the British GT Championship at Castle Combe on Sunday (19/20 June). In front of hundreds of visitors from team sponsor John Guest, they powered to victory as rain arrived in time to add even further drama to an excellent race. The victory, in front of a 20,000 crowd, backed up a podium finish in the weekend's opening race. "There couldn't have been a better win than that," said an elated Jordan. "It’s a fantastic result for the team and our sponsors!"In Saturday's opening race, Jordan and Sumpter clinched third place despite losing out badly at the start due to a problem with the starting lights. Jordan had put the car on pole position in qualifying and so had responsibility for controlling the pace of the pack in the run up to the rolling start. However, a problem with the lights meant that there was no green and Mike expected the start to be aborted. In the confusion, he lost six places before the first corner, but soon battled to get back into the lead. Then, the longer pit stop imposed upon them by the championship organisers cost them two places and Sumpter rejoined in third, which he held comfortably to the flag. "Without the problems at the start, we could have won the race," admitted Jordan, "The car is fantastic around here," he added. On Sunday, Sumpter started the race and drove a superb stint to keep the car right on the tail of their major rivals, the Porsche of Tim Sugden/Jonathon Cocker. "That was a great run; I was right on Sugden's tail all the way to the pit stop," said Sumpter after a performance that set Jordan up for a shot at victory. When Mike rejoined after the pit stop he was fifth but quickly blasted ahead of the cars in front of him, including boldly going around the outside of the Mosler of Richard Stanton under braking for Camp Corner. What started as a 10-second gap to the Cocker Porsche came down rapidly as Mike stormed onto the tail of his rival. Heading into Quarry with 10 minutes of the race remaining, Jordan grabbed the lead. However, he almost immediately hit power steering problems and was not able to pull away as quickly as expected. To add to Mike's problems, the rain arrived and conditions quickly worsened as the track got wetter and wetter. But in those conditions, he was able to out-pace Cocker and was a couple of seconds ahead when the race was stopped five minutes early due to the conditions. "That's just a classic sort of race for me," said Mike. "Our car was so good round here today!" Sumpter was equally delighted. "That all went exactly to plan."They really should have shared the podium with team mates David and Godfrey Jones in the Preci-Spark Porsche. However, a standard suspension component failed early in the race and pitched David into the tyre barriers at Old Paddock. Meanwhile, the team's cars in the GT Cup class had a mixed weekend. Damage to a water pipe from debris put Steve Wood/Stuart Scott out of the first race, but they returned to claim ninth in the second race. Meanwhile Peter Chambers/Graeme Langford took seventh in Sunday's race after retiring on Saturday with a damaged oil pipe. The team will be back in action this weekend (26/27June) in the FIA GT race at Donington Park when Jordan and David Warnock will race the John Guest-backed Porsche in front of what is expected to be a bumper crowd. The next outing for the British GT squad is at Oulton Park (Cheshire) on 17/18 July.
