Phil Hindley heads 2014 Tour Britannia field

Porsche expert Phil Hindley heads the field for this year’s Tour Britannia (6-8 August), which starts from Tarporley on Wednesday afternoon and finishes back there on Friday evening after two and half days of competition in and around North Wales. The tenth edition of Britain’s only classic race and rally tour runs will feature scrutineering and documentation at Tarporley, Cheshire on Wednesday morning and includes two visits to Anglesey for races on both the international and coastal tracks. Hindley has an exemplary record on Tour Britannia and is unbeaten since switching focus to competing in the superbly presented Tech 9-presented 911SC and with experienced co-driver Andy Bull alongside, it adds up to a very strong package.Leading the pursuit of Hindley in the Competition section of the tour should be Steve Perez and Paul Spooner in the sensational Lancia Stratos. However, an engine problem that developed in recent testing may force them Perez to switch to another car for his Tour Britannia debut.More strong Porsches pack out the top 10 including those of Stephen Radcliffe/Chris King, Tony Robinson/Keith Fellowes and John Spiers/Susanne Niedrum, while Duncan and Cate Buck start their 911 just outside the top 10.As the Ford Mustang celebrates its 50th birthday, Robert Hartley is back with his superb example and heads the pre ’66 machinery, while another front-running US muscle car is the Chevrolet Camaro of Stuart Scott and Steve Wood. The Camaro has a fine record on the event, and the fast flowing nature of the Anglesey track should play to its strengths. Two very quick Lotus Elans will be chasing the more powerful cars in the expert hands of John and Lesley Sheldon and Jeremy Cooke/Mike Dowd, while the Morgan Plus 8 of Roddie Feilden/Bill Bridges could spring a surprise or two. Further down the field is another Lancia Stratos for Philip Dolby/Helen Whitmore and the sensational Jaguar C-type of Ben Cussons.Running alongside the Competition section is the Regularity event and a strong entry is topped by the gorgeous Lancia Fulvia of brothers Steve and Tony Graham. Their major rivals include Nigel Perkins/Carl Cansdale (Porsche 911SC) and Andrew Brodie/Richard Payne (Citroen SM).Spectators are welcome at the Glan-y-Gors kart track on Thursday from 09.40 and at Anglesey circuit, where the first car is due at 13.00 on Thursday and 09.50 on Friday. There is no charge for admission at either venue. Unfortunately, there is no spectator access at other venues.
