WALES RALLY GB - Prestigious British Junior Award encourages next generation - Wales Rally GB 16 - 19 September 2004
The British round of the World Rally Championship Wales Rally GB - is putting fresh focus on finding new talent in motor sports with a prestigious new award for budding young rally drivers. Organisers have announced the British Junior Driver Award which will be given to the highest placed UK driver born on or after 1st January 1979, with a prize value of £1,000.
Wales Rally GB organisers hope that this new award will attract the up and coming talent in British motor sports, making this year’s event a showcase of British talent, as well as featuring some of the world’s finest rally drivers.
Andrew Coe, Chief Executive Rally GB Ltd, comments, "The British Junior Driver Award is a fantastic opportunity to attract young drivers and recognise talent early on. Amateur and privateer teams often include raw young talent and they are part of what make rallying such a special and inclusive sport. Anyone can enter Wales Rally GB, driving alongside some of the best drivers in the world, The new award and prize is an excellent way to put the spotlight on new talent and develop the British motor sports scene.”
With more stage mileage and a more compact timescale, the event organisers are making Wales Rally GB better value and easier than ever for amateurs and privateers to be part of the action, with the minimum impact on work and home. And the first 30 amateur entries received after the Regulations are released at the end of June will be guaranteed a place on the event.
Wales Rally GB now includes 240 miles of competitive stage mileage, the maximum allowed on an FIA World Rally Championship event. But the overall time schedule has been reduced so that 'on event' costs and time away from home and business are minimised. In addition, early entries and early confirmations ensure teams have the maximum amount of time to prepare for a thrilling weekend of world class rallying. And for the third year running, the entry fee for amateur crews remains the same to attract more drivers than ever before.
"This year we are putting young drivers at the heart of the action, bringing them the attention and recognition they deserve” confirmed Andrew Coe. “We are in the middle of an already exciting World Rally Championship season, so drivers should make sure they are part of the action at what looks set to be the best Wales Rally GB so far.
