Conway takes Donington Eurocup

Formula Renault UK Championship leader Mike Conway (Sevenoaks, Kent) took a fantastic victory in the sixth round of the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup at Donington Park, Leicestershire, at the weekend – the win made even more impressive considering he started ninth on the grid.

The Fortec Motorsport ace could only finish in seventh position during the first of the weekend’s ‘double-header’ races, which was won by Frenchman Patrick Pilet, but he made amends during the second outing to take the chequered flag more than 15 seconds clear of his nearest rival on the wet Donington track.

Further good news for the British contingent came courtesy of Manor Motorsport’s Paul Di Resta (Bathgate, West Lothian) who also finished on the podium with an excellent third place in race two, having only started 11th on the grid.

Conway commented: “We had to get used to some of the different parts which are used by the teams in the Eurocup and so qualifying and the first race were quite tough. But in the second race things went well and once I got into the lead it was just a case of not making any mistakes. I’m delighted to win a round of the Eurocup and we’re looking forward to the next round of the Formula Renault UK Championship at Croft next month.”

Di Resta, meanwhile, said: “It’s a good result for me and the team to finish on the podium, especially because we didn’t qualify well. I’ve gone well in the wet conditions in the UK championship already this year so I was confident we could be on the podium.”

In the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup, former Formula Renault UK drivers Ryan Sharp and Robert Bell both did well in Saturday’s ‘Grand Race’ by finishing in second and third positions respectively. Sharp, however, was handed a time penalty following the race and a subsequent appeal by his Jenzer Motorsport team means the result is still provisional.

Following a long mid-season break, the Formula Renault UK Championship will return to action at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire on 24th/25th July for rounds 11 and 12.
