Wighton joins Carrera Cup GB
Eddie Wighton will join the RPM Motorsport Porsche Carrera Cup GB squad for the rounds at Croft and Knockhill. The Scot will step up from the team's Radical team for, initially, four races alongside championship leader Tim Harvey.Although Wighton is based in Perth, only 20 minutes from Knockhill, he has yet to race at his home track, having only started racing in a Radical in April 2003. If the opening two events go well, Wighton is keen to continue in the Carrera Cup and has an ultimate ambition of racing at Le Mans."Eddie's done a first class job for us in Radicals," says team boss Robin Mortimer. "We don't expect him to be up with Tim to begin with, but we certainly expect him to learn well and make good progress." With Harvey due to switch to the team's as yet un-raced car, Wighton may take over the 911 GT3 Cup car that Harvey has taken to five wins in the 10 races held to date."Last year was a big, steep learning curve," says Wighton, a 31-year old company director. "But I want to get more racing experience and racing at Knockhill will be a great opportunity for family and friends to come and see me race," says Wighton. "Although I've done some testing at Knockhill, I've never raced there yet, so racing there in front of the BTCC crowd will be quite something!"Wighton is keen to learn from the experience of his team mate and knows the RPM environment will suit him well. "Robin is very good at encouraging drivers; he inspires confidence. And from my point of view, being alongside Tim will be a big benefit. It's a good opportunity."Wighton will test ahead of the Croft races over the weekend of 24/25 July, before switching to Knockhill for the weekend of 7/8 August.
