Porsche Supercup Horne & Rich star

Barry Horne and Martin Rich were the stars from the British drivers competing in the Porsche Michelin Supercup at Silverstone yesterday. While Horne battled into the top 10 only to be forced out on the final lap, a jubilant Rich raced to 13th in his first experience of racing in front of the British Grand Prix crowd.Horne, racing the VIP car, drove a superb race having started a disappointed 16th on the grid. An amazing opening charge put Barry into ninth place by the end of the opening lap and by mid-race he was in the chain of cars battling for fifth place. However, on the final lap, a top 10 finish was snatched away when the two cars right in front of him touched at Becketts and the car of Christian Mamerow spun. Barry had no chance of avoiding the sideways car and the resultant contact put Barry out of the race with a damaged radiator."I should have been fifth on the grid if qualifying had gone right," explained Barry. "But it was a good first lap and I just tried to get past as many as possible. Later in the race the car was a bit of a handful because I'd worked the tyres hard in the opening laps. Then on the last lap, all of a sudden Mamerow was there in front of me and I had nowhere to go."However, despite losing out on a top ten finish, Horne had again demonstrated his pace and will go into the Belgian and Italian rounds of the Supercup later this year confident of continuing this excellent form. While the other drivers from the Carrera Cup GB hit dramas, Rich took his Team Parker Racing entry through to a fine 13th place at the finish, and felt that, given one more lap, he could have challenged for 12th. "I'm absolutely thrilled," he reported after the biggest race of his career. "It was brilliant to be out there in front of so many people. I was a bit too cautious into the first corner, but it was an awesome experience."Another British driver with a top 10 finish in his sights was Jason Templeman (Team VLR). He was battling for 13th place on the fourth lap when a brush with the car of Philip Beyrer into Stowe sent Jason sideways. The closely following Nelson Piquet Junior just tagged Jason's car and left it with damaged suspension and out of the race. "I'd gone down the inside of him," reported Jason. "I wanted to get clear of Piquet and it would have been a top 10 finish. But it was good experience for me," he added.Meanwhile, Chris Cooper (Team Parker Racing) was on course to finish in the top 12 when a blown clutch forced him out on the ninth lap. "In the first couple of laps it felt really comfortable," said Cooper. "Then, the car developed chronic oversteer and I think there is a problem with one of the dampers. But I was pleased with the way it was going."A clutch problem also put Marcus Thomas (Team VLR) out of the race on lap three after an incredible opening charge. "I went from 23rd to about 16th and I was sticking with Barry and Jason," said Thomas. However, a missed gear at Club on the third lap blew the clutch and put an end to his promising race. While Horne will now prepare for his next Supercup outing at Spa-Francorchamps at the end of August, the rest of the Carrera Cup GB teams and drivers will focus on their next races at Croft on 24/25 July.
