Despite stormy skies DRM Racing were looking to shine with their Ferrari 360 in the 9th and 10th rounds of the British GT Championship at Oulton Park, Cheshire this weekend.
Despite the weather on Saturday, lead driver Adam Wilcox managed a qualifying time of 2:01.463 in the first qualifying session of the day expertly dealing with the precarious track conditions that saw other teams spinning and crashing out of the race.
Team-mate Ni Amorim also qualified respectably despite this being his first visit to the track and clocked in a time of 2:02.393 which translated to a grid position in row 9 for Sunday’s race.
The skies cleared up in the afternoon and meant that conditions for the first race of the weekend were significantly improved as Wilcox took up position on the grid in the Ferrari 360. But disaster struck when, on the warm-up lap, the Ferrari’s drive-shaft sheared putting the car out of action and out of the race.
The dedicated DRM Racing crew worked hard into the night to replace the broken drive-shaft and get the Ferrari race-ready. On Sunday the team put the previous day’s disappointment behind them and took to the track with hopes of a podium position. With archrivals Tech 9 looking to make inroads into DRM Racings lead at the top of the table it meant that the team would have to go all out to defend their position at the top of the drivers table.
Amorim took his place on the grid and, with the sun breaking through the clouds, the race was on. Amorim fought hard for position and at the change-over the team were in 8th position in the GT Cup. Lead driver Wilcox pushed the Ferrari hard and began to gain ground, overtaking Team Aero Lewis Racing’s Morgan Aero 8. As the race drew to a close Wilcox displayed the skills that have made him one of the most exciting young prospects in British Motorsport by inching the car into 6th past rival JWR-Cambridge Business Travel/ART’s Porsche 911 – thereby ensuring that DRM Racing retained the top position in the title race.
Now attention turns to Silverstone on August 13th/15th where DRM Racing will be running two Ferraris; the first driven by Wilcox and Amorim, the second by Lourcano Viega and DRM’s new signing, “wunderkind driver” Thomas Serwin in his first race for the team.
