Carrera Cup contest heads to Croft

After an early-summer break, the second half of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB season starts at Croft over the weekend of 24/25 July. Heading into rounds 11 and 12, Tim Harvey (Team RPM) has a 17-point championship lead over Richard Westbrook (Red Line Racing) and with a £55,000 Porsche road car awaiting the champion, the second half of the season promises to deliver some epic race action. A superb entry has been assembled for the Croft weekend, with series newcomers Eddie Wighton (Team RPM) and Ray McDowall (TCR) making their Carrera Cup debuts and David Pinkney (Pinkney Motorsport) making a welcome return to the championship. The 18-car field will be one of the best yet in Carrera Cup, and more drivers are expected to join the series over the closing stages of the season. With a total of 43 points available each weekend, Harvey knows that his lead is far from comfortable and Westbrook is determined to claw back the margin. Though Westbrook lives in London, the North Yorkshire track is very much home ground for the Red Line team, which is pitching at both the teams and drivers' titles this season. "Croft is our circuit," reckons team boss Simon Leonard. "We like to shine at Croft. It would be fantastic to win both titles this year and it is very possible," says Leonard.Currently third in the points is Jason Templeman (Team VLR) and he is still very much in the title race along with Jonathan Fildes (TCR) and Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing). However, the chasers really need Harvey and Westbrook to hit dramas if they are to close the points' gap.Like the Red Line team, Yorkshireman Rice can count Croft as his home track. "I like Croft and it’s my nearest circuit," he says. "But it's still about 80 miles from home – Yorkshire's a big place!" Rice will have a strong contingent of supporters on hand this weekend, not least from sponsors Thompson's Commercials. The one driver who could have a big impact upon the title race is Damien Faulkner, who will now complete the season with Motorbase Performance alongside Andy and Gary Britnell. The Irish ace is going all out for race wins over the second half of the year and could well give Harvey and Westbrook plenty to think about.Other contenders for top six positions include Pinkney, Andy Britnell, Chris Cooper (Team Parker Racing), Jason Young (Red Line Racing), Martin Rich (Team Parker Racing) and Mark Hazell (Team Parker Racing).Provisional championship points after round ten:1 Harvey 183; 2 Westbrook 166; 3 Templeman 135; 4 Fildes 121; 5 Rice 115; 6 Andy Britnell 90; 7 Chris Cooper 86; 8 Young 80; 9 Rich 62; 10 Gary Britnell 58; etc.
