Stuart Jones Swansea Bay Review

SPINNING SUCCESS FOR STUARTStuart Jones dominated proceedings throughout round five of the 2004 Peugeot 206 Super Cup, taking six fastest times over the seven special stages of the Swansea Bay National Rally. The rally utilising the tough Vale of Neath forest tracks that are also used on the British round of the World Rally Championship, the Wales Rally of Great Britain. The first special stage of the day welcomed competitors with wet and foggy conditions, the Welshpool driver and his Wolverhampton co-driver, Richard Edwards threw the gauntlet down from the start setting a time just point nine of a second slower than the fastest man on the opening test. However, things were not plain sailing to achieve their quick time."We came into a hairpin too fast and where they have been doing some forestry work it was very slippery and could not make the corner. I had to overshoot the junction to avoid hitting a log pile and we spun. It cost us at least ten seconds."On stage two the pair inherited the lead in their Mick Jones Timber Peugeot 206 by just three seconds. They continued to extend their lead on every stage, by the fifth the gap was extended to fifty-eight seconds with Jones confident he could go quicker. "We were pushing hard over the stages but not to the extent that we were taking any risks. Apart from the spin in the morning we have had no problems all day." As conditions improved and the stages became drier Jones and Edwards continued to up their pace and by the end of stage seven, the lead had increased to over one minute seven seconds. The pair have threatened to take a win all season having claimed three second spots and out of 56 special stages run as part of the Peugeot 206 Super Cup this season, Stuart has shown he is the fastest man in the Cup and notched up 30 stage wins with the next man a further eighteen stage wins away. The next event for Stuart and Richard will be the Mewla National Rally based in Builth Wells on 29th August 2004. The all tarmac event using the Ministry of Defence land on Mynydd Epynt in Mid Wales.
