Days of Thunder versus Top Gun

A perfect example of the technology transfer between the aerospace and motorsport industries was demonstrated yesterday at the Farnborough International airshow.  Officially marking the opening of the flying display, a Le Mans Endurance Series sportscar went head-to-head with a Jet Provost Mark 4 aircraft - and it went to a photo finish!

Driven by Sam Hignett, the QinetiQ Team Jota Zytek 04S sportscar has a top speed of 205 mph and can accelerate from 0-180 mph in 30 seconds.  The Jet Provost Mark 4 aircraft, piloted by Eddie Todd, is an ex-RAF forward air command trainer aircraft with a 1963 Rolls Royce Viper engine.  It has 2,500 pounds of thrust and can reach speeds of up to 400 knots.

"Both aircraft and racing cars embody all elements of high performance engineering and demonstrate innovative engineering solutions," said Duncan Valentine, Managing Director Transport at QinetiQ.  "QinetiQ has spearheaded the commercialisation of defence-based research into automotive applications."

The event marks the first time non-aerospace exhibitors have been awarded a presence in the prestigious flying display.  The Motorsport Industry Association has also organised The Motorsport Valley Pavilion, where a variety of road, rally and drag cars are being displayed.  The QinetiQ Team Jota sportscar will also be on display outside QinetiQ's chalet from Wednesday 21st July until the show closes on Sunday 25th July.

QinetiQ, Europe's largest science and technology solutions provider, is the Technology Partner of Team Jota, a leading British sportscar team participating in this year's Le Mans Endurance Series (LMES).

The partnership sees QinetiQ offer technical consultancy and the implementation of some of its core automotive technologies, including its 'Blue Magus' GPS technology, aerodynamics and composite components.  QinetiQ is also trialling new automotive technologies through Team Jota, whose car livery displays bold QinetiQ branding.

Operating as a sporting venture since 1998 under the guidance of its two owner/drivers John Stack and Sam Hignett, Team Jota was a leading British team in last season's SR2 FIA Sportscar Championship.

Scheduled events at which Team Jota is participating at during the season comprise:

·       8th May, Monza, Italy

·       3rd July, Nürburgring, Germany
