Gunawan Wins Suzuki Asian Challenge 2nd Race

Team Suzuki Press Office – April 21.Indonesian riders dominated the podium in the second race of the opening round of the SUZUKI ASIAN CHALLENGE Championship event at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia at the weekend.Andres Gunawan, riding the #43 Suzuki FU150, topped the podium after an exciting race between fellow Indonesian riders Adhi Chandra (#99) and Dedi Kurniawan (#55) in the restart after a red-flag early on due to a crash. First race winner and pole-setter Patis Chooprathet (#98) was in the mix at the front of the pack, but was hit by another rider and crashed-out.Former Indonesian Motoprix Champion Gunawan, who finished second in the opening race, currently leads the series on 45 points from Chandra on 33 points and Chooprathet third on 25 points.Andres Gunawan:“I was racing the Suzuki FU150 last season and it is an easy bike to ride. We learned from Race 1 and we had more teamwork for Race 2. I took extra attention in my racing lines and braking; I carefully-braked at the corners so that I could catch the rider in front of me. I am happy that all three Indonesians made the podium and will try to do the same at the next round in Indonesia.”Shunji Yatsushiro - Rider Coach:“Race 2 became a much rougher race than Race 1. I saw a lot of unnecessary rough playing among the riders. It is a very dangerous act, so I will be instructing them to avoid such acts. After two races, the riders are beginning to realise who their immediate rivals are, and with further experience, I am confident that they will improve. I wish to look after them in the long run.”The Suzuki-supported "SUZUKI ASIAN CHALLENGE" (SAC) is a new one-make program initiative to develop young Asian riders and is staged in conjunction with the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC).The series is produced and operated by long-time Suzuki rider Yukio Kagayama and uses the SUZUKI FU150, a motorcycle that has a 4-valve DOHC 150cc engine on an underbone frame.
