Andrea De Megni:
"After the bleak race in Silverstone, I couldn’t wait to findvindication at the next round. I was very motivated and charged inHockenheim. Right from the start at the free practice session, I had agood feeling with the car and the track. So much so that, I set the sametimes as those in the front line. Then came the qualifications: as soonas I got on track, I realized that my gearbox had a few problems.Problems that I even made me spin while I was trying to change the gear.I immediately made a pit stop and the Maserati crew tried to reset thecontrol unit in hopes of fixing the inconvenience in the shortest amountof time. But the pit stop made me waste about 20 minutes and with thelittle time that I had left, I did my utmost to catch up to the rest ofthem. Unfortunately the problem persisted and this made me finish in12th place on the grid.
At the end of the session the technicians inspected the car and foundthat the real problem was the clutch and not the gearbox. For thisreason I had to run the race with the test car. Regardless of theseproblems, I still had faith for the race. At the start of the race, Iconquered a few positions by taking advantage of the inside line. Then Ikeep a good pace and battled with everyone who was ahead of me. I waitedfor the last useful lap to make the obligatory pit stop and I pushedreally hard when I had a free track. This strategy helped me conquer afew positions.
The duel I had with Claudio Buziol was very spectacular in fact after avery vivid battle and by respecting the regulations, I managed toovertake him.
The sixth place finish is very satisfying for me: I could say that if Ihadn’t had those technical inconveniences during the qualifications onSaturday, I could have fought for the podium. But I’m not that type ofguy. Technical problems are a part of the racing world and they can’t beused as an excuse. Instead, I’m rather happy with the climb I did andwith my performance throughout the weekend. I hope I can get an evenbetter result in Imola on September 5th."
