INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, July 26, 2004 – While Michael Schumacher has made history and set records in Formula One with 81 career victories and six Drivers World Championships, Lance Armstrong of the United States has made history in the world of bicycle racing. Armstrong won a record sixth Tour de France on July 25.
Schumacher has great respect for what Armstrong has accomplished, and for the physical and mental strength the riders need to compete in the Tour de France race that is more than 2,000 miles long. But one should not try to compare their respective successes in the disciplines of F1 and bicycle racing, Schumacher said.
“I don’t really see that you should compare in any way, because what he is doing is so unique and so special,” Schumacher said. “I was … watching television, (seeing) them sitting on the bikes again after so many days … and so many kilometers they have done. I do training myself, and I know what it means to do what I’m doing, but to do what they do, that’s massive. It is really, really massive and impressive.
“We (F1 drivers) do, maybe, in other views, something different but obviously interesting, as well, for a lot of people. But to compare, I don’t think there’s common ground except the success.”
