Having made a good start and overtaking a couple of drivers at the first corner Matteo then lost positions in order to avoid the car accident which caused Muller to drop out of the race.
At the end of the first lap Matteo was running in 8th but the race was stopped by the safety car in order to remove from the track the cars involved in the accident. The race restarted after four laps and Matteo overtook Riberas taking seventh position. During the following lap the driver from Como overtook Lukas targetted Eng, his team mate ahead.
At Caixa corner, however, Schmidt violently bumped Matteo causing a spin and dropping him down to 19th position
Podium hopesd are fading, the aim is now gaining points for the championship. Matteo’s driving gets stronger and more aggressive and, in the last laps he gained places crossing the finishing line in 14th.
At the end of the race Schmidt got a penalty of 10 seconds plus three positions in the starting grid in Monaco. Therefore Matteo ends as 13th in the first weekend of the season 2015 of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
Matteo proved himself competitive, fighting at the same level as more experienced drivers. Cairoli will have the opportunity to catch up in two weeks, when the championship is scheduled in Monaco, with its winding roads.
Matteo’s programme continuing next week with the 24 Hours of Nurgburgring, at the wheel of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup MR of the Mathley Racing team.
Matteo Cairoli: “It is a good sensation the one I am carrying with me after this weekend. The championship is extremely competitive, with lots of drivers with close performance. I have positive feelings, I am very happy with the pace I had during the race, competitive from the very beginning. If there had not been the bumping with Schmidt, I could have aimed for the podium. However, I must get better results in the qualifying, which is fundamental, especially in Monaco.”
