The West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship heads backs to Wales for round four, the Severn Valley Stages (Saturday 30 May).The championship, organised by the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club, runs in parallel to the Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship and is aimed at clubmen historic crews as well as those running in the Open Category. With containing costs for clubmen as a prime aim, the championship runs to a six-tyre rule on all events.For the return to Wales after the foray to Kielder a month ago, crews will tackle 45 classic stages miles in the Crychan region. Heading the R.A.C. contenders from the championship’s Open Category are Phil Burton and Mal Capstick in their Ford Escort Mk2 and they will surely set the pace once more despite limited knowledge of these stages. Ranged against the Lancastrian crew will be Barry Stevenson-Wheeler/John Pickavance (Ford Escort Mk2) and Welsh crew Layton Waters/Tudor Jenkins (Toyota Starlet). Joining the Open Category for this event in a Toyota Corolla will be former Category 1 contender Graham Waite with Mike Reynolds co-driving.James Potter and Bob Duck head the historic R.A.C. crews in their Escort Mk2 and will go up against championship newcomers Gary Cooper/Jon Riley (Sunbeam Lotus) in Category 3. Among the 1600cc Category 3 cars are Grahame Standen/Jane Edgington (Ford Escort Mk2) and David Hopkins/Tony Vart (Talbot Sunbeam). Standen has been particularly impressive this season and will be aiming to get his title bid back on track after an early retirement in Kielder.Category 2 historic cars chasing R.A.C. points will be led by the Escort Mk1 of Aziz Tejpar/Phil Sandham. In the 1600cc class are the Ford Escorts of Malcolm Bayliss/Siobhan Pugh and Stuart Cariss/Linda Cariss, but the pace will surely be set by the Escort Mk1 of Vince Bristow/Tim Sayer. They’ve had a disastrous start to the season with two non-finishes, so will head to Builth Wells determined to get to the finish. If they do finish, they will certainly humble some faster cars.The rally will be based at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells. The first car will start at 8.30am and return to the finish at around 3pm. The Severn Valley Stages is organised by Midland Manor Motor Club.
