TURKINGTON PENALTY HANDS THOMPSON CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD

Colin Turkington has been demoted from second to fourth in the results of the first of Knockhill’s three Green Flag British Touring Car rounds after officials penalised him for overtaking Vauxhall’s James Thompson inside a yellow flag caution zone during the race.

Turkington followed team-mate Anthony Reid across the line for what seemed to be a 1-2 result for the WSR MG squad.

But BTCC officials  decided that Turkington gained his second place on the road by passing Vauxhall driver Thompson in front of yellow flags at the Taylor’s hairpin – being displayed after Team Petronas Syntium Proton driver Farique Hairuman had slid off the track.

The result promoted Team Honda’s Tom Chilton to second and Thompson to third.
