Silverstone GP2 post feature race press conference

Sirotkin, Rossi and Vandoorne discuss the race

GP2 Series: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the press conference for today’s feature race here in Silverstone: joining us today are race winner Sergey Sirotkin from Rapax, in second place we have Alexander Rossi from Racing Engineering, and in third place we have Stoffel Vandoorne from ART Grand Prix. Sergey, congratulations on your first win in GP2: how does it feel?

Sergey Sirotkin: Thank you, it feels great! We lost a bit in the first weekends, but it feels that it is coming back now, one by one, more and more to us and we have now finally made the win. Of course it's a nice feeling, and we are working a lot and we've improved a lot, so hard work always pays back, and that's what we've got! There is still a long way to go in the championship, and now we are looking to get up more into the fight: we just need to make sure we have this pace for the rest of the season, and it's going to be a good fight.

GP2 Series: You made it look easy from the outside: was it?

Sergey: Apart from the first couple of laps it was quite under control, I would say: the tyre degradation and everything was under control, and in the last laps I decided to go for the fastest lap of the race, and normally when you are leading a race you don't risk going for a quick lap, but the car was so controllable I could push it to the limit without any danger of not finishing the race. It was really under control, and just a brilliant, brilliant performance from the team.

GP2 Series: The move of the race for you was at the restart: was Richie going too far back, or did you catch him napping?

Sergey: It's a bit of both, I think! [laughs] I mean, the proper start was not the best, and in GP2 it's never 100% sure you'll do a good start, but after that we had the safety car and I think we've always been quite good on the restarts, always strong. We did it and straight away we got our position back, and after that it was just keeping the position and looking after the tyres to make sure everything goes our way.

GP2 Series: What does this win mean for the team?

Sergey: I think it means a lot: every weekend which goes well, and it started in Monaco where we finished on the podium, it is very good for the team spirit. We all worked even harder and then we got to Spielberg, and everything went really good again and the team were so motivated by that, and every time we get a result after our hard work it just motivates us so much, and we keep pushing even more.

GP2 Series: Congratulations. Alexander, P2 today and ahead of Stoffel: if you were offered that before the race I guess you would jump at that result?

Alexander Rossi: Yeah, definitely! I've said it from the beginning that we've got to try and take the fight to him on track, and today was the first day where we were generally stronger than him all race, so that's a positive thing to take away from it. But having said that we were clearly missing a bit to Sergey and Rapax, and I think that was a bit of a surprise to everyone but they've clearly done a great job, so there's another contender in the championship now, and good for them.

GP2 Series: I guess your race was a bit of experience and a bit of opportunism: are you satisfied with the work you've done today?

Alexander: Yeah, I'm very pleased with the race today: the start wasn't great and I lost a spot so we were fifth, and I had quite a big move to try and get around Stoffel at turn six but it didn't work and that damaged my left front a little bit, so I was a bit cautious then to not push too much in the high speed, which was a positive for us. I knew when the option starters were coming back on us we needed to get something done, and that's when I went for the move on Stoffel and Richie, and that kind of made our race because I knew my teammate was coming quite strong as well. The boys did a good stop with the pitstop and we were able to hold onto next second, and it was just about bringing the car home from there.

GP2 Series: Was it satisfying to know that you had enough speed to not have to worry too much about the guys behind you after the stop?

Alexander: It wasn't so much them I was concerned about, it was more the option starters: as it was it was very tight with my teammate, who had an amazing race and it just goes to show how good the car is. I really had to push on the in lap, and the stop was really important: did it make a difference to the result? Maybe not, but it was good to see that we were capable of delivering the laptimes when we needed to.

GP2 Series: Stoffel, P3 is probably not the result you were hoping for, but how was the race from your seat?

Stoffel Vandoorne: I think the result today is a little bit down to myself as well: I put myself in the wrong position after the start, and my start wasn't great, and then I was P4 and fighting a little bit with Alex as well. Our pace today was okay, it wasn't great, and to finish P3 today is still a pretty good result: we limited the damage in the championship, and we'll see what happens tomorrow, which should be a better race I think.

GP2 Series: You were fighting with Richie and Alexander and it looked like you got pushed out a little bit, which let him through: was that a problem, or something else?

Stoffel: I think Alex just caught me napping a little bit really, nothing more to say about that.

GP2 Series: How were the tyres for you today?

Stoffel: The tyres were okay, a little bit of oversteer, but it wasn't so bad in the end.

GP2 Series: Nevertheless, if a bad day is P3, it could be worse...

 Stoffel: Yeah, for sure.
