BBC's F1 Voice Ben Edwards adds to Castle Combe BRSCC Weekend

Ben Edwards, BBC’s Formula 1 commentator, is one of the star entries for the Castle Combe Circuit’s BRSCC Race Weekend Meeting on Sat 18th & Sun 19th July Edwards was an established driver prior to beginning his commentating career, winning the Formula First and Caterham-Vauxhall championships His last outings at the Wiltshire circuit were in the latter in 1992 when he went home with a win. This time, Edwards will compete with the established Combe runners in the circuit’s Formula Ford championship race on Saturday, as well as a round of the Avon National Formula Ford championship on Sunday.In the local championship, Langford’s Roger Orgee is the man currently leading the way on points in the Ridgmill Van Diemen run by Kevin Mills Racing from Gloucester, though he has intense pressure on him from the likes of his team mates, Michael Moyers from Wellingborough and Coventry’s Nathan Ward. Moreover, Chippenham’s Adam Higgins is now on a roll again after his customary modest start to the season in the family run Van Diemen with which he took a new lap record last time.Bridgwater’s Josh Fisher is a sight to behold in the handling of his 1989 Reynard, which decimates Class C and can run right at the front too.Yatton Keynell’s Luke Cooper performs similar ‘giant killing‘ acts with his Swift. Like many of the Combe championship contenders, Cooper will try his hand in the National race too.Russell Poynter-Brown from Compton Martin has a slim points advantage in the circuit’s ‘Saloon Car Championship’ with his D class Corsa, but his Interceptor team mate, Bristol’s Mark Wyatt in the B class  Astra is close behind  The two leading class A protagonists have been providing superb entertainment at the front of the field but in so doing have robbed each other of valuable overall points. Calne’s Tony Hutchings has been the great tactician in his fight with Southampton’s Gary Prebble whose SEAT Leon Turbo is faster than the Audi TT of Hutchings. To date, Prebble’s superior power has yet to translate into a win, but it could not have been closer and the loyal Combe crowd has loved every minute of the contest.The VW Scirocco of Bath’s Dave Scaramanga is a match for the SEAT and Audi, but so far has yet to beat them in a straight fight.Other notable front runners include Chippenham’s James Winter in his Renault Megane,Charles Hyde-Andrews-Bird from Ditcheat fresh from a win at Spa and Bill Brockbank from Stonehouse in his SEAT Ibiza Cupra. Keynsham’s John Barnard should be in the mix too with these guys in his Astra Turbo.Aside from Wyatt, class B has the likes of Tony Dolley from Bridgwater in his 206 and Fiesta drivers, Kieren Simmons from Weston Super Mare and Ayrton Anderson from Peasedown St John.The class C situation has Adrian Slade from Devizes, fastest in his Peugeot 106, but Bristol’s James Keepin, the man with the points in his MG ZR.The circuit’s ‘Sports and GT Championship’ is led by its sponsor, Dylan Popovic, in the 2.7 litre twin turbo Audi V8 engined Avatar. He will have to contend with Bristol’s Oliver Bull in his Vauxhall powered silhouette and Torquay’s Barry Squibb in his Evo. Cricklade’s Nick Holden will entertain with his Aeriel Atom.The other races are from the stable of the British Racing and Sports Car club. A very full weekend includes various races for Caterhams, the nearest sports cars to single seaters. Saloon car fans have the ever improving Honda VTEC challenge, the closest of racing for the Mighty and Super Mighty Minis and the Fiesta Junior championship for drivers as young as 14! You’ll also see the experienced older drivers in the Fiesta Jam-Sport championship.Saturday's action starts at 8.30 am with qualifying, racing getting under way from 13.15. Sunday’s first race is at 10:20 am.Admission prices are £10 for Adults and £7-50 for OAPs an Saturday and £15 for Adults and £10 for OAPs on Sunday, or £20 and £15 respectively for both days. Accompanied children under 17 are admitted free. ‘Paddock Transfer’ is free if the tickets are booked in advance.
