Epynt next for West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Championship

The West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship heads to the asphalt challenge of Epynt for round six, the Stephens and George Print Group Harry Flatters Rally (Sunday 26 July).Epynt always delivers a big challenge and five long stages await the crews, with all the notorious brows and dips that make Epynt a demanding yet rewarding place to go rallying. After the Harry Flatters, the season concludes with the Trackrod Historic Cup in late September and so the title race is very finely balanced. The title permutations are further complicated as several leading crews have opted to miss this round in a championship where crews score their best five results from seven rounds. The championship, organised by the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club, runs in parallel to the Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship and is aimed at clubmen historic crews as well as those running in the Open Category. With containing costs for clubmen as a prime aim, the championship runs to a six-tyre rule on all events.Once again the leading the R.A.C. contenders from the championship’s Open Category are Phil Burton and Mal Capstick in their very rapid Ford Escort Mk2 and they will set a fierce pace at the head of the pack. However, this is pretty much unknown territory for Burton and he will need to temper his pace with respect for a notoriously tricky venue. A strong finish on Epynt will put Burton and Capstick in the driving seat when the title race is settled in Yorkshire at end of September. The major Open category rivals to Burton will be Barry Stevenson-Wheeler and John Pickavance in their Ford Escort Mk2 and Layton Waters/Tudor Jenkins in their Toyota Starlet. Stevenson-Wheeler, like Burton, is seriously short on Epynt knowledge, but Waters knows the area far better.Heading the 1600cc cars are Grahame Standen/Jane Edgington (Ford Escort Mk2) as Standen breaks a long gap of competing over the ranges and their 1600cc historic opponents will be Malcolm Bayliss/Siobhan Pugh in their Escort Mk1.The rally will be based on the Epynt ranges. The first car will start at 8.30am and arrive at the finish in Brecon at around 4.30pm. The Stephens and George Print Group Harry Flatters Rally is organised by Brecon Motor Club.
