Back to Brands for Carrera Cup GB
The contest for the Porsche Carrera Cup GB returns to Brands Hatch over the weekend of 21/22 August for rounds 15 and 16. The title race is fast becoming a two-way battle between Tim Harvey (Team RPM) and Richard Westbrook (Red Line Racing) as they compete for the £55,000 Porsche road car that awaits the champion.Harvey knows that if he can keep on finishing in the top four, he will be very hard to beat as he retains a vital points' advantage over Westbrook. But the tight confines of the Brands Indy circuit could easily turn the championship on its head. After round 14 at Knockhill, Harvey is 29 points up on Westbrook and, in turn, they are nearly 80 points clear of the rest of the pack. In truth, there is precious little to chose between Harvey and Westbrook although Harvey has the edge in race wins, currently seven to five. Both are fine racers, completely on the top of their game and have already gone head to head in several fabulous contests this season.Westbrook has been left to rue his non-finish at Brands in April when he was tipped into a first lap spin. That no-score is still dogging his season as Harvey has, to date, finished well in every race. Realistically, Westbrook now needs Harvey to non-finish to really open up the title again.Four drivers are leading the chase of the big two, and a pair of strong drives at Knockhill put Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) into a fine third in the points' table. However, Jonathan Fildes (TCR) and Jason Templeman (Team VLR) are within two points of Rice while Andy Britnell (Motorbase Performance) is also well in contention.Templeman, a major title contender in the early stages, has suffered a torrid time in recent weekends as front-running pace has netted little in reward. His fortunes are due a change and that could easily come at Brands. Then there are the new hotshots of the Carrera Cup in the form of Damien Faulkner (Motorbase Performance) and Tom Ferrier (Team Parker Racing). Both joined the championship in recent weeks and were instantly chasing podium finishes. Expect big things of Faulkner and Ferrier at Brands.Adding further quality to a fine line-up are Jason Young (Red Line Racing), Chris Cooper (Team Parker Racing), Gary Britnell (Motorbase Performance), Marcus Thomas (Team VLR) and Mark Hazell (Team Parker Racing). But all eyes will be on Harvey and Westbrook as the contest for that £55,000 road car enters the final stages!Provisional championship points after round 14:1 Harvey 263; 2 Westbrook 234; 3 Rice 156; 4 Fildes 155; 5 Templeman 154; 6 Andy Britnell 136; 7 Young 93; 8 Cooper 86; 9 Gary Britnell 85; 10 Thomas 65; etc.
