Starting 25th on the starting grid, after being hit by Latifi and forcing his early retirement, the only Spanish driver in the series produced a sensational first lap overtaking no less than fourteen cars. At the end, severe tire degradation prevented from improving his 16th place.
Hilmer Motorsport´s Sergio Canamasas stole the show during Sunday´s GP2 Sprint race at Hungaroring. Against all odds, considering he was starting from last place on the grid as a result of his early retirement, Canamasas became the centre of attention at the early stages of the race.
His stunning start, telemetry revealing afterwards no other driver has made a better one so far, has catapulted fourteen spots after just one lap. Besides, Canamasas was able to avoid some race incidents and coming away with his car in one piece. Shortly after he managed to pass Robert Visoiu for tenth and, with many laps to go, points were in sight. But tire wear, despite cooler weather conditions, has become the main problem for Canamasas. As the Barcelona-born driver was losing ground, several drivers taking advantage from his tire wear problems and overtaken him at the end of the race. Canamasas, who finished 16th, showed today he is one of those rare drivers performing enthralling fights and spectacular overtaking maneuvers even at tracks such as Monaco or Hungaroring.
“I made a very good race start and I think nobody else managed to do it before in the series. It was really nice and it was the key factor to pass so many cars on this incredible first lap. It was such a shame our tires really dropped off towards the end of the race because, with ten laps to go, our pace was rather good”, Canamasas said, underlining that “as we had an early retirement yesterday, we didn´t have feedback about tire degradation. In fact, other drivers had the same problem yesterday. Now it´s time to take a rest and then, in August, we must carefully examine all available options”.
