DAMS scores a superb double in Hungary

In what was a very emotional weekend over which loomed the memory of Jules Bianchi, the Sarthe-based team scored an exceptional double in the feature race with victory going to pole sitter, Alex Lynn, from Pierre Gasly. It was, in fact, DAMS's first-ever one, two in GP2, and the result has propelled the French squad up into second place in the teams' title chase. Despite suffocating heat on Friday the team proved how much the Hungarian circuit suits it (Lynn 3rd and Gasly 5th in free practice). They continued their brilliant form in qualifying as the British driver scored his first pole position in GP2 ahead of the championship leader, Stoffel Vandoorne. His French team-mate also laid down a marker for the race with an encouraging fifth fastest-time. Lynn made a faultless start on Saturday afternoon and shot away in the lead followed by Gasly who also made a meteoric getaway. What DAMS had to do was to execute a perfect pit stop strategy to match the feat of ART, which had brought Vandoorne in very early on. The French squad did an impeccable job and Lynn was able to get back in front again seven laps from the chequered flag: five laps later Gasly consolidated the team's one, two. On Sunday morning, on the other hand, under leaden skies after the storms during the night and temperatures that were 10° lower than the previous day, it was a different story. Gasly and Lynn set off from sixth and eighth places, but suffered very high tyre degradation towards the end of the race as reflected by their results (Gasly 8th and Lynn 9th). Nonetheless, their superb performance the previous day means that DAMS can now take a few days' well-deserved holiday in a calm, optimistic frame of mind before tackling the second part of the season. François Sicard, Managing Director: "DAMS's first double in GP2 is obviously a day to remember for the team. It was a pretty stressful race on the pit wall, but Alex and Pierre both drove magnificently! Bravo to them and also to the technical team. Although our strategy was a bit risky it worked like a dream. On the other hand in the sprint race we maybe didn't adapt well enough to the changing weather conditions and the result was disappointing. This being said, overall the weekend's been very positive. Continuing in the same vein as at Silverstone our pair of rookies have shown that they're capable of mixing it the leaders, and that's going to boost our ambitions for the restart of the championship." Pierre Gasly: "Overall, it's been a very good weekend. I'm very happy to have given the team another top-three finish as they really deserve it. Without a small error in qualifying I'd have been on the front row, but I made up for it in the feature race. Catching all those drivers and getting past Vandoorne at the end felt fantastic, and it's another good result after Silverstone. It's given me even more confidence for the rest of the championship." Alex Lynn: "My first pole position, my second victory but this time in the feature race, it was an incredible Saturday! I'd really like to thank the team who bet on the best strategy. So the overall results of the first part of the season are very satisfying. We keep on improving although we've still got a long way to go as proved in the second heat here. But I've got absolute confidence in the team and our rivals will have to watch out for us in the closing stages of the season."  Summary Hungaroring  Pierre Gasly : P2-P8 Alex Lynn : P1-P9 Drivers' championship classification: 1.
