“The driver is decisive in the Audi Sport TT Cup”
The Audi Sport TT Cup is contested for the third time this season as support to the DTM at the Red Bull Ring. Eighteen regular drivers from 13 countries have already contested two rounds of the series at Hockenheim and the Norisring. One contender is Josh Caygill. Over the course of the season, the Briton has improved and he currently sits midfield in the overall standings – with his form on an upward trajectory. His aim is to make it into the top five.
Josh Caygill began his racing career when he was six years old, albeit on two wheels. He notched up three British junior motocross championship titles before switching to the cockpit of a race car in 2013. “I competed in the Volkswagen Racing Cup and the Scirocco Cup and after contesting these two competitions I realised that motorsport was more than just a hobby for me and that I want to race professionally,” says the 26 year old, who still works in his parents’ car dealership in Yorkshire during his spare time.
Caygill’s best result to date in the Audi Sport TT Cup is sixth place. “I’m only just getting the hang of things and I have to improve, especially in qualifying. Then a podium result would be possible,” said Josh Caygill. What he most appreciates about the Audi Sport TT Cup is that all cars are identical and success or failure is solely up to the driver. “There are no excuses, you can’t blame the car. The advantage of this is that you can accurately assess your progress as a driver.”
The Briton knows the tyres of premium manufacturer Hankook from England and the 24-hour race in Dubai. “The performance of the Hankook race tyres is very good, plus the tyres are incredibly consistent. When you’ve reached the peak, they hardly fade at all, the drop-off effect is minimal. And this is very reassuring for a driver,” explains Josh Caygill.
The 26-year-old pilot has set his sights on more top ten finishes in the Audi Sport TT Cup, and a podium result would mark the crowning achievement of his career so far. “I want to continue improving as a race driver, and I’d like to progress into Audi Sport’s GT programme and tackle another 24 hour race. But the most important thing is that I can live my dream as a race driver.”
