Local drivers take the top three places as the MSA British Hill Championship returns to Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, near Worcester this weekend. (15/16 Aug)
Tenbury Wells driver Alex Summers heads the pack in the Gould GR61X he shares with reigning champion Scott Moran of Ludlow, who himself lies third, while Worcester driver Trevor Willis is in second position with his OMS 28 racing car.
Scott commented: “Alex is driving very maturely at the moment and if he can maintain the momentum it looks very promising for him, although Trevor is keeping up the pressure and I recently set a new record in Guernsey so I also hope to do well at the weekend.
“All of the drivers are sending out their best wishes to our well-respected rival Jos Goodyear, who delights spectators everywhere in his spectacular GWR Raptor and is currently recovering after a nasty accident at the recent Jersey round.”
Regarded as the Blue Riband event of the year, the ‘Championship Challenge’ weeeknd comes at a crucial time in the season where final positions are taking shape and the best drivers and their cars from across the UK descend on the iconic Teme Valley venue to take part in fierce motorsport competition.
Newly appointed competition secretary for the Midland Automobile Club is Robin Webb, who comes from Worcester, and said: “We have been over subscribed for many months but even after cancellations we have a capacity entry list in all classes for what promises to be a fantastic event.
“This month will see the 110th anniversary at Shelsley Walsh and we have examples competing over the weekend to showcase the varying types of machinery that has taken part here over the decades ranging from 1920s lightweight specials, through names like Cooper and Pilbeam to the latest Gould cars which are competing today.”
Over 20 sports and racing cars are taking part in the Paul Matty Sports Cars Lotus Championship and sponsor, Paul Matty, added: “This Lotus handicap championship is always very popular and provides a level playing field for all drivers, while bringing together owners of all types of Lotus cars in a very friendly yet competitive atmosphere, so we are all looking forward to yet another great weekend at this historic location.”
A wide range of classes for sports, saloons, classic and racing cars will be taking part in practice and qualifying on the Saturday with timed competition runs in programme order on Sunday starting at 9.15am both days. A ‘Top 12 Run Off’ for the fastest cars competing in the British Championship will take place at the end of both the morning and afternoon sessions on Sunday.

Tickets are available on the gate, at £12.00 for Saturday and £15.00 for Sunday admitting you to the Paddock and seated enclosures. Children under 16 are free. Programmes are available on the day at £3.00
