Lockie buoyed by Silverstone speed

The most competitive performance to date from the diesel-turbo powered Lola B2K10 left Calum Lockie buzzing with enthusiasm after the Le Mans Endurance Series race at Silverstone on Saturday (14 August)Although the prototype entered by Taurus Sports was destined not to finish the six-hour race, its pace and performance suggested that a top 12 finish was now within reach and the weekend was a major boost to the team's bold campaign.Despite missing Thursday's untimed session due to technical problems, the car ran strongly in qualifying on Saturday. Calum went out first and posted a 1m51.3s best, which was good enough for 19th place in the 38-car field at that point. "I was very pleased with that as the car was running beautifully," said Calum after driving the car on new tyres for the first time.Eventually, his best for the session was 1m50.6s, which left them 24th. In second qualifying, an incredibly dirty track and then oil prevented any improvement and so Calum, Phil Andrews and Richard Jones would take 24th place on the grid. "That was pretty good progress for the whole project," said Calum.Andrews took the first stint in the race, running trouble-free for an hour and a half and moving up to 20th place overall. Calum then took over and in less than an hour had continued the car's excellent progress up to 17th place. However, a rev limiter problem than developed and an unscheduled stop followed as the team resolved the problem. "By then we'd dropped to about 30th, but I got back to 22nd before the end of my two-hour stint," said Calum.Jones now took over, but the car was forced out shortly after the four-hour mark when the front crankcase oil seal blew and the car lost oil pressure. Despite retiring, Calum and the rest of the team were very upbeat about the progress being made."Silverstone was a massive step forward; the car was so much more driveable. It is really good progress and being able to race the car was fantastic. It is a great basis to move forward from and shows just how hard the team is working," he added.Next stop is the final LMES race of the season at Spa-Francorchamps on 11/12 September. "I'm definitely looking forward to Spa," says Calum!
