Stockcar titles settled - Wimbledon

Spedeworth South  (www.spedeworth.co.uk) got the new Stock Car season underway at Wimbledon Stadium with two pedal to the metal championship races being settled in traditional full-contact Stock Car style

The 1300cc Stock Cars got things underway as the drivers piloted their armoured cars over 20 laps of the Plough Lane Stadium in pursuit of the British Championship.

The pre-race grid draw for position saw 443, Derry Monk draw pole, ahead of a very determined gird of star drivers. The action was non-stop from the second the green flag fell with Monk storming off and the opposition lunging at his rear bumper. The lead swapped several times as the bumpers went in, but a determined Monk fought back each time with well-timed barges that sent the opposition wide and allowed him to reclaim the front running position. As the laps fell away and cars fell victim to the safety fence and the aggressive use of the front bumpers Monk grimly held on to take the British title ahead of a very hard charging 392, Julian Smith, and 11, Lee Boulden.

The first night fans barely had time to get their breath back from the Stock Car title race before the Superstox took to the track for a 30-lap marathon to decide their London Championship.

A cross section of the formula's star drivers, including current World Champion 22 Mark Kelman, lined up for the race and set a blistering pace when the green flag dropped. 124, Dave Miles Snr was the early leader but was quickly overhauled by 711, Simon Mallett. Mallett was driving a good race and looking good for holding the lead, but the star drivers were soon ploughing through the pack.  376 Steven Jackson took up the lead as the race began to reach its climax. With his great experience at Plough Lane Jackson soon began to build a commanding lead and held onto it until the finish to take the London title ahead of 174, Paul Poulter and 481 Colin Bradley.

The two title races served notice in no uncertain terms that Stock Car racing is back at Wimbledon Stadium. More full contact action will be delivered on Sunday, August 29th with the Unlimited National Bangers, Stock Rods and Ministox.Full details from Spedeworth International on 01252 322 920 or www.spedeworth.co.uk
