(SPEEDWAY 1 - MONDAY REVIEW)
SCUNTHORPE climbed off the foot of the Premier League table with a 49-41 win over local rivals Sheffield on Monday. The Eddie Wright Raceway staged the only league meeting of an otherwise wet Bank Holiday, with remedial work to the track allowing racing to begin after a half-hour delay.Theo Pijper was top-scorer for the Scorpions with 11 points from four rides whilst Leigh Lanham picked up 10+1 on his debut. New Sheffield No.1 Jason Garrity won three races on his way to 12 points for the Tigers.Scunthorpe boss Dave Peet said: “It's nice to move off the bottom; to be honest, I don't feel we've deserved to be down there, but we've had a lot of back luck this year. The team spirit and determination of this side is not one that deserves to finish bottom.“But we're not going to get giddy. We have a job to do in the crucial meeting against Redcar on Friday, to consolidate our position.”Sheffield co-promoter Damien Bates said: “The track was really wet to start with, and gating was vital early on although it did dry out and we got some good racing as the meeting went on. Fair play to Rob (Godfrey) and all the track staff at Scunthorpe, they did a fantastic job to just get the meeting on."The track conditions weren't ideal and I think that went against us a little bit, in normal conditions I think we could well have got a win.”The second half of Scunthorpe’s meeting saw 14-year-old Jack Parkinson-Blackburn crowned Midland Development League Riders’ Champion.Parkinson-Blackburn, who turns 15 later this week and is set to have National League outings for Buxton, defeated Layne Cupitt, Callum Walker and Alex Wilson in the Final.Buxton boss Jason Pipe said: “Before the meeting started I was very nervous for Jack, but I knew he'd be able to handle himself and cope well with the occasion! He has a very good team of people helping him out in the pits who know what they are doing, which is a very big help to him.“As his Buxton team manager, I'm very proud of him tonight and I'm so looking forward to watching him win more races and trophies in the future. He deserves to be MDL Champion after the way he's being riding in MDL meetings.”
