Jones Plans Double Success
Following a long overdue win in the 2004 Peugeot 206 Super Cup, taking victory on the Swansea Bay National Rally. Stuart Jones will be looking for his second successive win in the series, when he contests the Mewla National Rally on Sunday 29th August. Jones took victory on the demanding terrain of the Epynt Military ranges above Sennybridge, when the championship visited last year, so he will also be keen to repeat his 2003 win.The Welshpool driver and his Wolverhampton co-driver, Richard Edwards currently lie third in the series and know a win is essential to keep their championship aspirations alive. Having taken three seconds and one win so far this year heading into the sixth round, Jones heads to Mid Wales not only as the fastest man in the series with thirty stage wins out of fiftysix completed over five qualifying rallies. The young driver has already tasted victory over the ranges this year, winning the International Welsh Rally outright at the wheel of his Proton Satria.Although the Welshman has not turned a wheel in anger in over six weeks, this has not deterred him from stamping his authority on fast tarmac roads of the Mid Wales venue."We did win on the ranges last year, plus back in May on the Welsh, so we know we can be competitive there. The stages may differ slightly, but the majority of the roads remain the same and will be familiar. Having failed to finish one event, we need to take a good score on this rally, so we will be going for the top spot from the start. Some drivers have contested a rally on Epynt earlier this month to help them prepare for this rally. We decided to stay away, having been there once this year we had little to gain from the additional mileage."The Builth Wells based Mewla Rally will run a total of eighty-eight miles over thirteen timed special stages to test Jones and Edwards in their Mick Jones Timber Peugeot 206. The rally gets underway at 9am on Sunday morning with competition throughout the day before the finish at approximately 5.00pm at the Royal Welsh Showground.
