Katherine Legge (Guildford, Surrey) makes a welcome return to British motorsport this weekend after agreeing terms with Motaworld Racing to contest the final two meetings of the 2004 Formula Renault UK Championship with Michelin.
The 24-year old, who has so far this year been competing in the North American Formula Renault Championship, has signed a deal to take part in the 17th and 18th rounds of the season at Snetterton in Norfolk this weekend, 4th/5th September, and also the final two rounds of the year at Donington Park in three week’s time.
Legge will race in the number 34 car which has been driven this season by 2003 Formula Ford Festival winner Joey Foster (Truro, Cornwall). The Cornishman has himself switched to Team JVA for the Snetterton races, replacing the injured John Byrne (Magham Down, East Sussex) who has been missing from the championship since the mid-summer break in July.
Speaking ahead of her Snetterton return, Katherine commented: “This is really exciting for me and it’s fantastic to be back racing in Formula Renault UK. I’m delighted to have signed this deal with Motaworld for the last two meetings of the season as it is certainly one of the most competitive teams in the paddock.
“It’s good to be back competing in the UK. I’ve been working very hard to get the sponsorship in place to continue racing and that’s one of the reasons I went to America to race Formula Renault over there. I’m very much looking forward to the races this weekend.”
After a successful career in karting, Katherine made her first appearance in cars in 2000 before debuting in the Formula Renault UK Championship during the final round of the 2001 season at Brands Hatch with Falcon Motorsport.
In 2002 she signed with front-running Fortec Motorsport and hit the headlines after taking pole position at Oulton Park. Unfortunately, sponsorship difficulties curtailed her season after just four rounds but in 2003 Katherine was given the opportunity to contest selected British Formula 3 Championship events.
Alongside Formula Renault UK Championship with Michelin front-runner Susie Stoddart (Northampton), Katherine is one of the hottest British female talents to have raced in the category and it should be intriguing to see how she fares against Susie – who has, of course, taken three podiums this season - on her return to racing in the UK at Snetterton.
The pre-event official test session takes place at 09.00 on Friday, 3rd September, with qualifying and the races for the 17th and 18th rounds of the season scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday, 4th and 5th September.
