Flanders-Smith switches co-driver

Championship contender Steven Smith will have a new co-driver for the Tour of Flanders, round six of the Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship over the weekend of 11/12 September.Smith's regular co-driver, John Nichols, has been prevented from contesting the Belgian event due to work commitments, but is determined to rejoin Smith for the final two rounds in October."For the first time in about 16 years I'm going to have to get used to someone else's way of doing it," says Smith. "Chris Flavell had to scratch his entry in the Porsche and so he will be joining me, and we'll see how we go!"Smith's confidence in Nichols and their pace notes was central to their famous Manx Historic Rally win after a mighty performance in thick fog on the first leg of the rally. "I don't really think it's going to be foggy twice in a row," admits Smith, "but a bit of rain wouldn't go amiss!"Nichols should be back in the co-drivers seat of the XS Racing Escort for the Trackrod Rally on 2 October. "That is very good news, because whilst the car is not brilliantly well suited to the very fast bits in Yorkshire - it is our favourite gravel round of the year," says Smith. "No matter how well Chris and I adapt to each other - I cannot imagine that I will have be able to commit the car to the level I do with John  - straight off the start ramp in Flanders!"
