Sutherland makes comeback in BHRC

James Sutherland will make his rallying return on the Tour of Flanders, round six of the Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship over the weekend of 11/12 September. In only his second event since retiring from the sport in 1990, Sutherland will compete in a newly-prepared Porsche 911 from XS Racing and will be co-driven by Howard Pridmore.Through the 1980s, Sutherland was a star of British rallying and won the BTRDA Under 25 award and earned a place in the British Junior Rally Team. On the 1982 Lombard RAC Rally he took an Escort RS2000 to 24th overall and second in Group A and he competed in the 1989 British Championship with support from Vauxhall. His career developed in tandem with that of his brother Alastair. However, due to family and business commitments James stopped rallying in 1990. "I always kept an interest in rallying and I always loved Porsches," he explained. In 2003, Steve Perez invited him to drive a Porsche on the Jim Clark Memorial and he finished a remarkable second overall in the historic event. "I'd started building a car by then and although I was very rusty, it was great fun," says Sutherland of the one-off outing. The donor Porsche from California was taken on by XS Racing and is now an immaculate 3-litre post-historic car in the famous colours of Gulf Oil."It's like a brand new car. XS has paid so much attention to detail," says Sutherland. "We're aiming to take it to Flanders, just for a run out. We’ve had very little development time so far. XS has done a beautiful job on the car!"Subject to backing, Sutherland is now considering a full BHRC campaign in 2005 or, alternatively, will tackle selected tarmac events.
