Harvey & Westbrook win Snetterton

Tim Harvey and Richard Westbrook both took wins in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Snetterton on Sunday (5 September) to set the stage for a dramatic title-decider in the final round at Donington Park.QualifyingWestbrook claimed an incredibly important pole position for round 17 on Saturday. Not only did that put Westbrook (Red Line Racing) in pole position for the first of Sunday’s races, it also scored him an extra point over title rival Harvey (Team RPM). Harvey qualified second fastest, just 0.061s slower than Westbrook.“I’ve got to treat this like any other weekend,” said Westbrook. “I’ll just go for it and race as hard as ever.” However, the point for pole position was a real boost for Westbrook, who will now go into the first of Sunday’s races only four points behind Harvey.“The only objective is to finish both races and go away with an increased points lead,” said Harvey after coming so close to taking pole. Despite a problem with a wheel, Harvey charged right onto the pace in the closing stages of the session. The pace of the two championship contenders left them nearly half a second clear of the rest of the field.Having topped the testing times, Damien Faulkner was slightly disappointed to drop to third fastest for Motorbase Performance, and was almost matched for pace by Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing). After struggling for pace in testing, Rice flew in qualifying to claim a fine fourth, only a tenth of a second away from Faulkner. Unfortunately, his session ended with a heavy off into the marshals’ post on the inside at Russell. “I knew I couldn’t go any faster, but you keep trying! They reckon they’ll get me out for tomorrow,” he said.Double Brands Hatch winner Jason Templeman (Team VLR) was fifth fastest, still striving to find the absolute pace of Westbrook and Harvey, while Jonathan Fildes (TCR) completed the top six and was the last of the drivers to lap within a second of Westbrook’s pole position time. The next quartet of cars was also closely matched as Jason Young (Red Line Racing) narrowly headed Andy Britnell (Motorbase Performance), Alex Mortimer (Team RPM) and Gary Britnell (Motorbase Performance).Race oneHarvey won round 17 on Sunday morning to take his slender championship lead back out to seven points. Title contender Westbrook led the early laps, but dropped to second after a high-speed spin at Coram and had to work hard to fend off Faulkner and Fildes over the closing laps.Westbrook got the jump on Harvey off the grid and built an early lead as the title rivals pulled quickly clear of the rest of the pack. However, it all went wrong for Westbrook at mid-distance. “I hit some debris and the splitter was damaged,” he explained of the problem that led to the spin. While Westbrook spun onto the grass, Harvey raced ahead to take a crucial lead.Meanwhile, Westbrook rejoined with the front splitter on his car damaged and was soon coming under increasing pressure from Faulkner and Fildes. After a poor start, Faulkner had stormed up the order and twice grabbed places with bold moves at the Esses. For the final six laps, Westbrook had Faulkner and Fildes right on his tail, but that was how it stayed to the flag as Westbrook claimed a vital second place. However, over the last three laps they all got closer to Harvey as the race leader eased his pace.“We tried to set the car up to be strong all through the race,” said Harvey of his race strategy. “Then the air filter came loose and it sounded really bad inside the car, so I just cut the revs back. I was also staying off the kerbs to try and avoid any punctures,” added Harvey. At the flag, his winning margin was down to just 1.2s, while half a second cover the next three cars home.“That’s a perfect result for me,” said Harvey. “Richard’s spin did make my race easy,” he added. Westbrook, meanwhile, was relieved to have rescued second place. “It’s not the end of the world; it’s still do-able,” he said of the title race.“I need to get the start right,” accepted Faulkner after claiming the final podium place, while Fildes was right with them at the flag. “Another couple of laps would have been good,” said Jonathan. “But we’re on the pace!”Templeman dropped away in fifth while Rice took sixth despite finding his car’s handling not 100% after his accident in testing. Into seventh with a fine Carrera Cup debut went Mortimer after Gary and Andy Britnell spin in unison at Russell after Gary ran wide onto the marbles!Provisional results – 16 laps:1 Tim Harvey (Team RPM) 19m04.627s; 2 Richard Westbrook (Red Line Racing) 19m05.874s; 3 Damien Faulkner (Motorbase Performance) 19m06.205s; 4 Jonathan Fildes (TCR) 19m06.416s; 5 Jason Templeman (Team VLR) 19m16.954s; 6 Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) 19m33.837s; 7 Alex Mortimer (Team RPM)  19m36.566s; 8 Jason Young (Red Line Racing) 19m44.422s; 9 David Rothwell (Porsche Cars GB 19m47.872s; 10 Gary Britnell (Motorbase Performance) 19m53.913s. Fastest lap: Harvey 1m10.004s (100.38mph).Race twoDespite a big challenge from Harvey over the second half of the race, Westbrook held on for a hard-earned victory in round 18, which means the title contest will go down to the wire in the final races at Donington Park. The opening laps were a repeat of the first race as Westbrook built an early lead before Harvey started to hunt him down mid-race. Their pace took them clear of the pack as Fildes, Faulkner and Templeman battled for third.Over the second half of the race, Harvey closed in relentlessly on Westbrook despite having lost the splitter from the front of the car on the second lap. However, Westbrook knew that he had to stay ahead to keep the title race open and he defended well to the flag for a very important victory. “To be fair I was hanging on in there at the end and I knew I had a fight on my hands,” said Westbrook.“He definitely had the pace on us in the early laps, but we were strong later in the race,” said Harvey. “We’ve got the same points’ lead as we came here with,” added Harvey, who will go into the final pair of races just five points ahead of Westbrook. “It’s going down to the wire, and that’s how it should be!”Faulkner spent many laps trying to find a gap in Fildes’ defences and finally got his chance when Fildes had a big slide at Russell. Faulkner dived ahead on the exit of the corner to claim third as Fildes fended off Templeman for fourth. Once again, Faulkner had lost time at the start and spent much of the race fighting back into contention.Another excellent battle for sixth went to Rice, but only just as Andy Britnell and Young ran him close.Provisional results – 16 laps1 Richard Westbrook (Red Line Racing) 18m57.732s; 2 Tim Harvey (Team RPM) 18m58.003s; 3 Damien Faulkner (Motorbase Performance) 19m04.901s; 4 Jonathan Fildes (TCR) 19m06.005s; 5 Jason Templeman (Team VLR) 19m07.643s; 6 Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) 19m20.671s; 7 Andy Britnell (Motorbase Performance) 19m20.857s; 8 Jason Young (Red Line Racing) 19m21.699s; 9 David Rothwell (Porsche Cars GB) 19m38.110s; 10 Eddie Wighton (Team RPM) 19m56.977s. Fastest lap: Faulkner 1m10.322s (99.92mph).Provisional championship positions after round 18:1 Harvey 312; 2 Westbrook 307; 3 Templeman 220; 4 Fildes 212; 5 Rice 184; 6 Andy Britnell 164; 7 Young 119; 8 Gary Britnell 105; 9 Faulkner 100; 10 Marcus Thomas 86; etc.
