Maybe I should change my name," ponders Redditch racer. After taking his first top 10 finish last time out, Mike Luck was hoping for a repeat in the penultimate Days of Thunder meeting of the year. But the only Luck on the horizon was all bad.
Since the last round Mike had arranged for his Team 24:7 car to have technical assistance from the Torquespeed Team. "They set the car up in the workshop and in Friday's test it felt much better. We have gained a new baseline to work from and could have done better than 15th in qualifying. I think it has helped me rediscover my confidence. I am still losing time in Turn Four, but flying in Turn One as the car is so much more stable," he said.At the start of race one he suddenly dropped back to 19th place and it was obvious there was a problem. With only nine laps gone he peeled off into the pitlane. "The steering cooler split on the warm-up laps. I decided to go for the start still and see how it went, but Gary my crew chief ordered me in as it could seize," he explained. After rejoining for another seven laps later into the race, Mike came upon a collision between two of his rivals, and hit the brakes to avoid any contact. "I had been hoping for some quick laps, but when I hit the brakes a front wheel bearing collapsed and I had to head back to the pits," he said. The team were hoping for things to improve in the second race, but after running consisently in 15th place, Mike came upon a debris strewn track after Chris Cooke's bodywork had disintegrated. "I really thought I had picked my way through it, but his window clip managed to go through my oil cooler and so I had to pull off," said Mike. Fortunately the engine survived but the day was brought to a conclusion with a second disappointment. "I think I should change my name for better fortunes," he concluded.
