Wrexham rally driver Jamie Edwards will make his forest debut on this weekend's Plains Rally - a round of the BTRDA National Rally Championship. After completing 5 tarmac rallies this season, the Welshpool event will be Jamie's first ever attempt at the classic forest stages of Mid Wales.Edward's has received backing from MATADOR Tyre Sport UK for his gravel debut, where Jamie will be asked to give testing feedback on their latest range of forest tyres on the 42 stage mile rally. The Plains uses famous stages such as Dyfnant, Dyfi, and Aberhirnant - classic Welsh forestry stages where the likes of former World Rally Champions Colin McRae and Richard Burns honed their skills. With extra backing from Silkolene Oils, Green Filters, EuroRallye and SeaSpan Motorsport Logistics, Edwards is confident that he and his Irish co-driver Patrick O' Connor can do well on what is by far and away the biggest test of Jamie's rallying exploits so far.The Welshman recently contested the DPS Stages near Trawsfynydd as a warm up for the event, and was pleased to finish just outside the Top 30 on the well contested rally. Despite being virtually all tarmac, the stages were extremely slippery after torrential downpours, giving Jamie plenty to ponder as he successfully negotiated the twelve short special stages on offer in the Nissan Micra. With the car coming through the rally unscathed, Jamie's attention now turns to the demands of driving the Micra flat out on the slippery gravel roads that make up the Forestry Commission owned plantations. As one of the premier National Rally Championship's in the country, Edwards is realistic about his chances, as he competes in the tough 1400cc section of the field. Nearly 50 cars will start in the up to 1400cc category alone in the rally, making life all the more difficult for the 28 year old from Kings Mills:"We'd have to go pretty hard to make inroads with the quality of opposition against us - but that's not the reason for contesting the Plains Rally" said Jamie. "I'm hoping to contest the Formula 1000 Forest Championship next year, so its important to dip a toe in the water this year to see if its going to be a good idea or not. Ever since I was a child I'd dreamed of driving on Welsh forest stages, so its fantastic that I'm finally going to realise that dream this weekend. Pat and I are both very much looking forward to the rally, as it will be our first event together and we are long time friends - so we're going out to enjoy the challenge.Of course I'm particularly grateful to MATADOR Tyre Sport and Craig Middleton for helping us out for this rally. Craig will be on the event to give us plenty of advice and encouragement as we use a new version of the MATADOR M&S tyre, which is ideal for the muddy and slippery conditions that we will face. We've also been very fortunate to hire some gravel rally wheels from Iain Shirlaw at EuroRallye to keep the cost down as well, so it all amounts to being a great weekend, where we can go out with no pressure and just enjoy the stages. The Micra is virtually standard underneath so I'm under no illusions that we can compete against much more highly modified machinery, but there will be just as much 'fun factor' in our car, so I can't wait!".The Plains Rally gets underway from Welshpool Farm Market at 9am on Saturday 25th September, taking crews across to the forest of Dyfnant near Llanfyllin before heading south to the famous Dyfi forest. With stages near Dolgellau and Bala to contend with, Edwards will have completed nearly 200 miles in one day if he reaches the end of the event. The BTRDA Championship draws competitors from across the UK, and is one of the most competitive championships in top level British rallying.Team JemSport 2004 - supported by MATADOR Tyre Sport UK, Silkolene Motor Oils, Green Air Filters, EuroRallye and SeaSpan Logistics.
