FROM DONINGTON TRIPLE HEADERRookie driver Harry King secured a brace of points scoring finishes from the first triple-header of the Simpsons Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship at Donington Park, with the youngster heading away from the weekend optimistic about the remainder of the 2016 campaign. The 15-year-old went into the second meeting of the year looking to build on the potential he displayed in the season opener at Brands Hatch, where he gave glimpses of his speed at the wheel of his Elite Motorsport-run Ginetta G40.Harry qualified twelfth on the grid for the opening race of the weekend at the East Midlands circuit and then led the Elite challenge as he took the chequered flag in 13th spot; just losing out on eleventh in a heated three-way fight to the line.Race two would end in early disappointment for Harry when a mechanical issue forced him to retire to the pits after just two laps, but hard work from his team ensured he was able to take his place at the rear of the grid for race three.Showcasing his ever improving race craft, Harry took the fight to his rivals ahead and having made up four places on the opening lap alone, he would race well in the midfield pack before crossing the line in twelfth place – marking his best result of the season to date. The double score from the weekend means Harry sits 17th in the championship standings, albeit just five points away from the top twelve as the series heads to Thruxton – the fastest and most challenging circuit on the calendar – in three weeks time.“It’s been a tough weekend in terms of results, but there are also a lot of positives for me to take away from it,” he said. “I think that I’ve gained good experience of racing in the pack and have shown that I can fight hard with people on track and make up places. My racecraft has certainly improved and now I just need a little bit of luck on my side.“The team had worked hard on the car since Brands Hatch and it felt really good. Qualifying was really tight but from twelfth on the grid, I thought we were in a good position to try and get into the top ten. It was difficult in the pack and the race didn’t go as well as I hoped, and then in race two we were just unlucky that the diff went and I lost power.“It was always going to be hard from the back of the grid for race three but I think I did a really good job to fight through to twelfth place. Fourth rookie was a good finish to race day and showed how well I can race; it’s just a shame I was starting at the back and not right in the middle of the action.“Thruxton is next and having already tested at the circuit, I’m really excited about going there to race. Hopefully I can take everything I have learned here, and we can push forwards into the top ten.”
