Days of Thunder
A character building season for the Team Catchpole squad finished on a high, with team driver Phil Weaver (Southampton) recording two top ten finishes in the final Days of Thunder rounds at Rockingham. After qualifying eighth on the grid, Weaver was optimistic about his chances. "It's been perseverance with the car and not crashing. John Steward has been a great help too and now we have the right castor and camber set up. We just need to carry the form into the race," he said. Weaver was one of the drivers who kept an eye on the weather during qualifying and seeing black clouds, he got out early. "I found a space and set my time on the second flying lap. When the rain started we put the car away and was just pipped for seventh by Stevie Hodgson," he explained. With rain forecast for raceday the organisers ran both Days of Thunder races back to back with the minimum delay. At the start of race one Weaver held his grid place, before John Mickel and John Steward worked their way past. As the quicker drivers who had been caught out by the weather in qualifying began to work through, Weaver settled in 12th. "The set up wasn't good enough to run more than 10 laps with leaders. I settled in a position for endurance and a finish, we'd set the tyre pressures to excessive," he explained. His plan worked to perfection as he capitalised on others problems to take the flag in 10th place. The second race turned into a personal duel with John Steward. Having forced his way past for seventh on lap four, Weaver had to give best to a charging Oli Playle, before taking up the duel with Steward once more. Weaver had the edge on this occasion, as the battle raged before and after the pitstops. Steward finally spun and left the Catchpole driver to take a worthy sixth. "We had a great pitstop, but I couldn't stay with Rob Speak. When I pushed to catch him the tyres went off and I dropped back each time," he concluded. With Gates Fab Group livery on the car for the first time, the 2004 season finished on a high note, with plans already being made for May 1st, the opening round of the 2005 Days of Thunder Championship.
