Dorian Rees, Trackrod Review

GAME PLAN PUTS REES ON COURSE FOR PRODUCTION TITLE

Dorian Rees, extremely encouraged by his performance on the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire, will head to the final round of the Kwik Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship confident he can win the Production Class title in the series. The Llanybydder driver and his Aberystwyth co-driver Patrick Walsh threw down the gauntlet on the opening stage setting a fastest top ten time and fastest Production pair over the short Pickering Showground stage. Rees led the way for the BRC regulars to follow, opening up a lead of over twenty three seconds from his nearest championship rival by the end of stage seven in the Subaru Impreza WRX and lie just inside the top ten at ninth place. "It is good to get back to loose surface rallying after the three tarmac rounds. We have taken it easy over the opening stages and very happy to be leading the class. The set up on the car is good and we are not pushing too hard to take any risks, the finish is more important to our campaign." commented the enthusiastic driver at the rallies first service. The Welsh pair lost the lead on stage eight when a rear driveshaft broke on their car losing around forty seconds over the test. The next service was the only opportunity to change the shaft, leaving the pair to drive stage nine with the problem incurring another slow time dropping the duo out of the top ten down to eighteenth place and losing the lead and over two minutes in the Production Cup going into the overnight halt in Malton."We lost our lead, but that is how this sport goes. We had to take it steady over the last stage of the day to ensure we didn't cause more damage and end our rally."Rees set about moving back up the leaderboard with five stages remaining clawing back four places overall to finish the rally in thirteenth place, despite a puncture on stage eleven. The pair also finished fourth in the Production Class, while maintaining their lead in the Prodrive Subaru Cup. The pair now lie second in the Production Cup going to the final round of the series, The Tempest Rally on 5th/6th November. Setting top thirteen times over twelve of the fourteen stage rally, six of which were also inside the top ten has fuelled Rees' enthusiasm for the final deciding round. "We are really happy with our result here, we aimed for a finish and we have really enjoyed the Yorkshire experience and can go to the final round knowing none of our championship rivals were able to match our pace when we didn't have a problem. This has given us the boost we needed and as long as we have no problems we will be on the pace again on the Tempest. We can now win the series and it is down to our rivals to take it away from us. We don't actually have to win the class on the final round, so we don't have to push as hard as our rivals, so we won't have that to pressure us."Rees was also keen to contest the final round of the National series, The Bulldog Rally on Saturday 23rd October. The result on the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire has now swayed the Welshman to contest the final BRC round."We had considered doing the Bulldog if things did not work out this weekend, it was the first rally we had contested in this car last year. I would still love to do the rally, bur not at the risk of using our car. It would be nice to have a World car for the Bulldog and see how we perform in a competitive car. We have had good results in both the Peugeot and the Subaru, so stepping into a World Car could give us our first career win."
